In general, what does Cornell Engineering look for in transfer applicants? I realize their transfer acceptance rate is very low (below 10%), but I really want to transfer and I am definitely going to apply.
Is the process more stats driven than freshman admission? How much emphasis is put on HS grades? And would it help if I retook the ACT to go from a 34 to 36?
Also, I saw on the website that applicants can apply to two colleges “at the discretion of the dean” or something like that. Are the requirements different from college to college (difficulty, courses, etc.). I find the CU website to be really confusing (there’s a main transfer page, then there are ones for every college).
Any help will be appreciated…thanks!
Oh, and one more question. Does contacting admissions/sending application early matter??
Bump
Aren’t you a current senior? Why didn’t you apply to Cornell in January? They’re going to weigh your high school grades pretty heavily if you try to transfer after a year, just a heads-up.
Good luck!
I got rejected outright in ED, now I’m just trying to get my last semester above a 4.0, and then get a similar GPA in the first year of college. I was actually surprised, because my HS has an over 50% acceptance rate to Cornell…
Gotcha, sorry to hear that. I think your standardized test scores are fine and would focus on doing well wherever you go your first year. CoE is definitely competitive for transfer applicants, and if the engineering discipline you’re interested in is offered in CALS (eg: bioengineering) then I would consider applying there first, as the contract colleges seem to be more open to students reapplying. Extracurriculars and “fit” will matter if you choose to go that route, though!
And you don’t have to end up at Cornell to succeed. I looked at some of the other schools on your list and they all have great engineering departments as well. Hope everything works out!
Will contacting admissions/sending application early show them interest or will they consider it annoying
Does Cornell care that much about whether the applicants show a lot of interest or not?
@moooon ^
can someone please clarify?
@ayprcwbjmy @Moooon
For freshman admissions, Cornell does not look at level of interest. Presumably it’s the same for transfers but I suggest emailing the admissions office to be sure. Source: Cornell common data set https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000554.pdf Page 7.
Thanks!
Ok, this thread is awkwardly stagnant, but is there anyone here who transferred to Cornell (with a not-so-great HS record)?
S1 was a soph transfer to AEM with a “not-so-great” HS Record. His application from HS would never have been considered. He earned 4.0 GPA for 2 semesters, wrote a pretty awesome essay about his passion for financial markets and was accepted to Cornell AEM.
