(Cornell University Dyson School of AEM) V.S (New York University's Stern School of Business)

Hey, I want some advice on which of these two schools would be the smartest decision. While I know that these are two of the top business programs in the country and I am extremely grateful to be accepted (with there being such a low acceptance rate), I am sad to say that I have received no aid from either of these schools.

I am a Black/African-American male in New York and my net household income is approximately $120,000, however these schools are still very expensive for me to attend. My financial aid package from NYU consists of $74,000 every year in loans and Cornell stated to me that I didn’t qualify for any financial aid.

Since these schools will cost around the same amount, I’m now trying to figure out which one I should commit to. Cornell’s Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management is a young upcoming business program that’s been ignited through Cornell’s prestigious Ivy League reputation. New York University’s Stern has maintained its reputation as one of the best business programs in the country due to it’s lucrative location in NYC: ability to obtain numerous internships and work experience for connections. Nevertheless, I have been leaning towards Cornell’s Dyson School, because I feel that I would be granted the better undergraduate education there, with such small-sized classes (under 100 people admitted to this program).

One more thing, my parents recently paid approximately $40,000 for my grandmother’s air ambulance to transport her to the United States to cure her brain aneurysms and stroke. Do you think an appeal towards these schools, in which i mention this situation, would help my case as to why I should be granted some financial aid?

Thank you guys for reading, and I am appreciative for any feedback!

Congratulations!

Cornell AEM and NYU are not the same price. Isn’t AEM still in CALS? If so, tuition is only about 35k for NY residents. $52k all in.

You can appeal, but that expense probably won’t be considered. So Cornell gave you no aid at all?

Thanks! But oh wow you are right! I did not realize the $52,951 included everything, however i would still be in major debt unfortunately.
And nope, their financial notice for me stated, “After careful consideration of all the information you provided, we have determined that you do not qualify for need-based financial aid for the coming year. At the same time, we realize that paying for your education requires financial planning. We are committed to helping you explore the various financing options that are available. For more information on these options, please visit our website”

Nevertheless, which school do you recommend?

I honestly believe you filed for FinAid incorrectly. Call Cornell and see what you did wrong. 120k is well into the realms of receiving good finAid. Also, I was accepted into both programs last year and choose Cornell due to the small class sizes.

Oh ok, will do!!

The OP stated that the family’s income is $120,000 net. What is the gross?

120,000

Cornell does take appeals for medical expenses if you have proof of the expense as well.
