Cornell University Official Class of 2011 Early Decision Results

<p>Decision: Accepted to CAS!!!</p>

<p>Stats:
* ACT: 33
* SAT IIs: SUPER LOW!!!!! (this might give RD people hope). Lit- 680, US hsitory- 650
*GPA: 3.96w...don't know what it is unweighted
* Rank: 12/285 (top 4%)
* Other stats: don't feel like typing out
Subjective:
* Essays: really good and original. Common app essay was verrrrry clever in incorporating Cornell and Ithaca into it without sounding cheesy.
* Teacher Recs: one good...one bleh
* Counselor Rec: decent
* Hook (if any): I live in Mississippi, but I was the chapter starter of my school's Young Democrats of America (which I guess is unique since MS is mega republican hardcore), I am also the founder and president of my school's Asian cultural society (I guess that set me apart too since I am trying to promote racial tolerance and knowledge in a place where it's often too homogenous). I've also lived basically all over the world (so international exposure...talked about that a lot in my essay).</p>

<p>Location/Person:
* State or Country: Mississippi
* School Type: public
* Ethnicity: Chinese
* Gender: Female
Other Factors:
Lots of extracurriculars that express my broad range of interests. For an Asian, I'm very liberal artsy. I am on the school debate team (secretary). Lots of leadership positions. Community involvement etc...participated/organized the first international week at my school. Some work experinces as waitress and as a model for Hollister...Governor's school during the summer....I dunno...I'm sure I had more but I can't think right now.
General Comments: COOOOOL! Good luck RDers!</p>

<p>Wow, basically everyone got accepted! Congrats from a Penn class of 2011'er.</p>

<p>Yeah did neone get rejected? I hope it wasn't a mistake. . .</p>

<p>It's not unusual to see a high percentage of CCers get accepted, especially ED. Check out the Penn decision thread and you'll see the same thing. CCers are already more qualified than the average applicant and I'm guessing no one who got rejected from Cornell yesterday is dying to post on CC right now.</p>

<p>BTW: Congratulations to eveyrone who got in. Prepare to work your @$$ off next year. It's not unusual to see 0.5-1.0 drops in GPAs from HS to freshman year of college.</p>

[ *] Teacher Recs: i sent three and read 2 of them- both amazing. I couldn't believe my teacher actually see me as that kind of a person. Even though I didn't read the last rec, I knew it would have been good as well because my english teacher loved me last year.
[ *] Counselor Rec: must have been very...very generic.
[ *] Hook (if any):None.

[li] Other stats: 6 AP Tests, all 5's - Chemistry, World History, US Gov/Pol, English Language, Statistics, Computer Science AB[/li]National Merit Semifinalist
[/ul]</p>

<p>Subjective:[ul]
[<em>] Essays: Really good; a spin on a cliche topic.
[</em>] Teacher Recs: Stellar
[<em>] Counselor Rec: Not too sure; I wouldn't be surprised if she confused me for another student with a nearly identical name.
[</em>] Hook (if any): I want to major in Atmospheric Science, and it just so happens that I actually work professionally in that field already, doing programming for companies that contract work with NOAA and doing work at the National Weather Service.
[/ul]</p>

<p>Location/Person:[ul]

[</em>] Gender: Male
[/ul]</p>

<p>Other Factors:
Extracurriculars:
Eagle Scout,
over 300 Hours Community Service, with about 1/3 with me in charge as project coordinator,
Captain of my high school's Varsity Quiz Bowl Team (competes at NAQT HS NC and PACE every year, placed 7th and 12th in the past 2 years)
Assistant Concertmaster of the Louisville Youth Orchestra,
Violin for 10 years - (not competitive with it, but play for fun, make it to All-State, stuff like that, featured on From the Top w/ my orch)
President of my high school's Young Democrats club for two years, extremely politically active,
Not active in research, but competitor with some intriguing un-mentored projects at the local/state level (last year with a partner, we used evolutionary programming to evolve algorithms that could perform pattern recognition on EEG data, if we had a mentor we probably could've been even more successful than we were),
Work as a programmer for a local IT company,
Unique major - Atmospheric Science,
Volunteer/work at the National Weather Service's local office,
Varsity Swimmer at my High School,
there's more, but these are the big ones</p>

<p>General Comments: I'm very pleased with this outcome; See you all on campus!</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted CAS</p>

<p>Stats:[ul]
[<em>] SAT: 1940 (660/650/630)
[</em>] SAT IIs: 770 - World History, 740 Chem, 660 Math Level I
[<em>] GPA: ~97/100 UW (Not sure of exact decimal and my school doesn't weight)
[</em>] Rank: Not given
[<em>] Other stats: ACT 30
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Essays: Great I think (My English teacher liked them). I decided to not go straight forward in the supplement and actually used the change in Andy Roddick's tennis game over the past year as a metaphor for my intellectual interests.
[<em>] Teacher Recs: Amazing (At least the one I was able to read, but the other had to have been good since the other teacher is known for great ones and I had a 100 average in his class)
[</em>] Counselor Rec: Assuming it's good since she always seemed impressed with me.
[<em>] Hook (if any): 7.5 years of martial arts maybe. Possibly that my school has a lot of success sending kids to Cornell.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[</em>] State or Country: New York (Albany region)
[<em>] School Type: Public
[</em>] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: EC's: Cross-country, tennis, martial arts, Key Club, tutoring, NHS, Masterminds, Model UN Vice-President, and band for 7 years. I'm also a first generation college student.
General Comments: I know for sure Cornell is the place for me and I'm excited to have gotten in.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted to engineering</p>

<p>Stats:[ul]
[<em>] SAT: 1570, 2290
[</em>] SAT IIs:790 math II, 780 Japanese, 770 chemistry
[<em>] GPA:99.97 weighted
[</em>] Rank:13th out of 323
[<em>] Other stats:Good ECs?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Essays: One good, rest okay
[<em>] Teacher Recs: Probably good
[</em>] Counselor Rec: Probably generic but good
[<em>] Hook (if any): Well-rounded, maybe?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[</em>] State or Country: New York
[<em>] School Type: Public
[</em>] Ethnicity: Asian
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments: I can't believe it... I'm ecstatic... good luck to RDers!</p>

<p>i am kind of stupid and not knowing how to post stats, can anyone give me a hint how to use it???</p>

<p>*Decision: ACCEPTED - CAS (Biological sciences) *</p>

<p>Stats:[ul]
[<em>] SAT: 2080 (740 math 680 CR 660 Write 11 essay)
[</em>] SAT IIs: 800 chinese 780 math level 1 760 biology M
[<em>] GPA: 4.8/6.3
[</em>] Rank: 200/1023
[<em>] Other stats: philosophy club, snowboard and ski club, senior computer tutoring, a summer internship, a job..... nothing major, did not cure cancer and told them about it in a supp essay
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Essays: hmm i liked it, it was definitely not an average essay because i basically told a story instead of just saying what im good at. the subtle message probably went through
[<em>] Teacher Recs: didn't see it
[</em>] Counselor Rec: didn't see it, but she hated me. when i asked what i got for course rigor, she said she gave me a 3/5, this is when im taking physics, advanced biology AND chemistry 2 all in the same year and because of double labs, i dont even have lunch on some days.
[<em>] Hook (if any): nope not any
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[</em>] State or Country: PA (but am canadian, so international)
[<em>] School Type: just a plain old large public
[</em>] Ethnicity: asian
[li] Gender: male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Im very capable and that showed in the interview, thats all i can say for myself in this situation. My 'crappy' GPA and rank was not due to my low grades, but rather a very complex and confusingly weird weighing system that my school uses to evaluate high school transfer students ( i came from Canada to the states starting my junior year and all the credits i took before i came here was weighed VERY low)
General Comments: i hope everyone here will be sucessful at cornell!!!!!~~~~~`</p>

[<em>] School Type: Public
[</em>] Ethnicity: Asian-American
