Cornell University-What are my chances?

I am planning to apply early decision to the hotel school at Cornell in the fall. I have two siblings that are now alumni at Cornell, and a sister who is currently a senior at Cornell. They have all succeeded extremely well at Cornell.
-I have been working a job at a movie theater since seventh grade. I do many managerial jobs such as counting the money, doing inventory, and training new employees. I also deal with multiple customers, so therefore I have developed strong customer service skills.

  • I had an internship over the summer at a hotel in my town. It is a small property so I worked with all of the different departments and handled guests on a regular basis.
-I take hospitality classes at my local college (I’m still a senior in high school.)
-I volunteer regularly at a soup kitchen in my town.
-I was director of social media for the 2016/2017 school year in FBLA(future business leaders of america)
-I am currently vice president this year in FBLA
-I qualified and competed at nationals this past year for FBLA. (I also won first at districts and second at states)
  • I am an active member in NHS(national honor society)
-I am participate in Link Crew
  • I am in the top choir at my school
    -I have all A’s except two semesters where I got a B and a B+
  • My current ACT score is a 28, but I am retaking it to try to get a 30.
-I am in the top 10% of my class.
-I take the most challenging AP and DE classes offered at my school.

I am worried that my act score and having two B’s will bring down my chances. Will they overthink those factors because of my knowledge of hospitality and other accomplishments?

To many colleges, grades and test scores are categorized as “very important,” and extracurriculars are “important.” Even if you get a 30 on the ACT, thats still below the 25th %tile. Because of this, Cornell is probably a reach. If you applied regular decision, it would be a high reach.

Will it still be a reach with all of my activities that have to do with hospitality and my other accomplishments? And two of my siblings got in with 29’s as the ACT scores, so I’m hoping they can overlook my scores as well.

Not sure about what scores are required for HRM, although your ECs do line up quite well. Nonetheless try to get above 30 on the ACT.

Hi, I was accepted to Cornell last year (but am not attending).

I think you would get accepted as you are right now. You definitely have a good shot. Make sure to mention that you have had two siblings there!
