Cornell vs Rutgers, want to be a doctor

Hi,

I've been mulling over this decision for the past week and have been hesitant because I was waiting on the Fin Aid package from Cornell (sent in the stuff a bit late). I was dead set on attending Rutgers University because frankly I'm going to be a Bio major and hopefully in the future I want to attend Med School and become a surgeon later on. Now I asked different people's opinions and I've heard 2 sides of the story:

A) Go to Cornell because it has the better name and even if you get a slightly lower GPA it's better to go to an Ivy League because then you can get into a better Med School...then you have a better chance at getting into the difficult residencies such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, etc.

B) Rutgers is the better choice because as long as you have a high GPA it won't matter that much as to what name school you graduated from and you will still get into a good Med School and do very well in life. All that matters is that you get your BA because your not going for your Masters or anything.

Both of these opnions seem viable - but that's the thing they are opinions. Everyone has different views and I just want the best pathway to becoming a succesful doctor.

What do you guys think? Also, please don't bring money into this my decision is based on education solely.

No offense but I think you should go to Cornell just because you’ll be able to enjoy campus life, food, scenery MUCH more than at Rutgers. I’ve heard bad stories.

Sure, it might be a teeny bit more difficult to succeed at Cornell, but it’s more than worth it.

Do they cost the same? Would you take out big loans for Cornell?

Yes, a strong GPA and a strong MCAT is what’s needed.

Cornell is pretty successful at placing students in med school. You’ll have a better experience at Cornell and they will teach you the work ethic you’ll need for a medical career.

cornell’s a lot of fun! and we send a lot of kids to med schools each year. the advising staff are really, really helpful and profs are really into helping you get research positions and get involved.

Well if money is not an issue go to Cornell of course.

Yea they would cost near the same, Cornell being a few thousand more expensive…and Recharge have you heard bad stories about the Newark or NB campus?

@collegehelp: That’s really what I’m looking for, I want to get into a good medical school and have a shot at a good residency so I guess Cornell would be the better choice.

^yep. superior classes and advising system will help you with MCAT and placement. Cornell wins smack down.

Guys I just have a question,

how do you withdraw from a college (like Rutgers) if you already paid the fee for acceptance and are enrolled.

^Would I even be allowed to? I would think so…right?

You will most likely lose your fee paid to Rutgers.

Go to Cornell. It will better prepare you for taking the MCAT’s and medical school.

Morrismm is correct, you will just lose your deposit if you change your mind.
