Cornell vs. Uchicago : Workload and stress in the humanities

I have heard that everyone at Uchicago is super stressed out and hyper competitive. Is this the case for a humanities major? Is the same true of cornell ? In order to do well at these schools, does one have to forgo a social life and study constantly ?

I haven’t gotten “hyper-competitive” from Chicago at all. Stressed, yes, but not necessarily in a bad way, if that makes any sense? People are stressed because it’s a lot of work, but they also genuinely enjoy it.

Chicago students report that they do, in fact, have social lives (or at least some of them do), although I suppose you’ll just have to take them at their word on that one.

Cornell requires a lot of hard work but it is entirely manageable. Cornell has a 95% graduation rate. That should tell you something. Cornell students have fun, too. There is time to pursue other interests besides academics.

The humanities in general aren’t particularly stressful, from my point of view. And really, visit the schools and it should be pretty obvious most people there are pretty social.
