Cornell vs Wash U.

Here is another one!!! I have been accepted to Wash U and Cornell, fashion programs. Wash U is one fourth of the size of Cornell and seems to have a lot of happy students. Also rated slightly higher in US News. Any one willing to weigh in?!!!!

What a nice decision to have to make. Which one is closer to where you live? How did the financial aid packages compare? I haven’t visited Wash U but Cornell is such a beautiful campus, in such a perfect college town.

I really wouldn’t base an important decision on an arbitrary ranking, especially in such a niche field.

I would really just do a lot of research on the fashion programs at Cornell and WashU and see which one you like better. I know Cornell has a great program.

i wonder how the fashion differs on both sides of the country lol…

i will say that cornell’s fashion department seems to be active in the sociological factors and environmental factors that concern fashion…

not sure about washU though…

I researched both before I applied and they are pretty similar. The reason I mentioned the US News Report is because my Dad is hung up on it!!! I have visited Wash U and liked it a lot, am planning on going to Cornell Days. I am leaning towards Cornell since I am from the mid west and would love to experience the East Coast, knowing it is upstate NY! Neither school is giving me much dough.

Exactly, that is why I had such a blast writing my Cornell essay! Wash U’s program is more focused on the fine arts.

So is he going to get hung up on things when the rankings arbitrarily change over the next five years?

Where in the Midwest are you from? Great Plains or the Great Lakes?

Cornell has some interesting connections to the Midwest. It can often feel like a Big 10 school, and a lot of Cornell’s Presidents have come from the Big 10. It probably has the most Midwestern feel of any of the Ivies (although being from the Midwest I definitely had some culture shock in interacting with all of the kids from the East Coast) and sometimes I think the pop/soda line runs right through Ithaca.

The biggest thing about Cornell’s fashion program is the Cornell Design League, which puts on the big fashion show every year:

http://www.rso.cornell.edu/CDesignL/index.php</a></p>

The other thing I know is that there has been a lot of talk of making stronger connections between the design program and the art/architecture program at Cornell.

Great Plains. LOL!!! We call it soda!

So you’re definitely from the Show-Me State then?

<a href=“Beats Design”>Beats Design;

Wow, you are good! Another reason I am leaning towards Cornell! Wash U is too close to home, but a fabulous school with more East Coasters than midwesterners.

It was either that or Milwaukee, and Milwaukee isn’t in the Great Plains.

Don’t get me wrong. Cornell has more East Coasters than Midwesterners as well. Part of it has to do with the fact that the Big 10 schools are all so good.

I know, I loved Madison but was concerned with the lack of Fashion programs and did not think they offered the best job placement opportunities. Also, I love to have fun but was worried about the “party” school vibe.

Meh. Wisconsin is big enough that you can stay away from it. So is Cornell, although Cornell’s a bit smaller, so the party scene ironically might feel bigger.

Thanks for your insight! Hopefully I can make a decision by end of April, but am still leaning towards Cornell.

I am sorry but I just have to interject quickly. As jobs are becoming increasingly harder to obtain in this country, unfortunately, the name of your school and the education you receive is fairly important. There is just something to be said about attending an Ivy League school. It seems that being apart of the Ivy League opens more doors. Cornell is an amazing school academically, and they also have a huge alumni network which is a great resource to have once you graduate. Coming from NYC I know they have a beautiful club here for Alum and what not, which will be awesome when I graduate.

The Ivy League just has a connotation with the name…no one memorizes the rankings in US News and World report, however many individuals do know the eight Ivy League schools in the country that will NEVER change, while a rankings report can change year to year. The decisions seems pretty clear cut to me. While this is very important also make sure you are HAPPY at the school you chose, and not just because of the name! (however the name seems to be what’s important to you/your family)

Congrats on getting into both!!! Good luck making your decision!

mamma, i am from the show me state also and i just have to say that you shouldn’t look at the US News rankings at all. washu supposedly practices yield protection to improve their rankings (a lot of debate about this)… and to be honest, not many people outside of the midwest know or care about washu. on the other hand, you go back to MO with the cornell name and it makes a difference. im a freshman and i have a pretty good internship lined up for this summer back home.

in the end its your choice though – see where you can see yourself and fit in better after you visit cornell. if you have any questions id be happy to answer them.

Thanks loads, I am visiting Cornell next week and may pick your brain with any questions.
