Cornell West and Af/Am Studies

In order to get all the talk about Cornell West and Af/Am studies out of the \"Women\'s Issues\" thread, I decided to bring that part of the discussion here. For starters, below are several articles on the subject matter:

http://www.pragmatism.org/library/west/

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2004/09/30/2_more_black_studies_professors_leave_harvard/

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/09/24/national2137EDT0740.DTL

Here is the seminal Harvard Crimson article that put\'s it all in perspective:

http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=161286

And here is the concise and accurate CBS News analysis of the issuews in the "Cornel West Flap"...

http://www.conservativenews.org/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200201/POL20020108e.html

The seminal article? Written by a student? The same student described below?

\"Strange Goings-On in the Student Publishing World: Recently, some truly wacky crap has gone down in the pages of Harvard\'s publications. Remember that Indy article of a few weeks ago about the PLSM? Well, okay, I probably wouldn\'t either if not for the photo above it. Among all the demonstrators bearing signs and shouting for fair merchandise practices, Ross G. Douthat, President of the Salient and conservative mouthpiece of the Crimson, stands in the midground, looking absolutely bamboozled. Nonetheless, I wish to congratulate Ross on joining the PSLM and supporting their worthy cause.\"

Not just ANY student, ashilgee, but a Crimson editor who has since shot to stardom as a best-selling author with an unsparing vision about what kind of reform is needed at Harvard.

He clearly saw dumping Brother West as a step in the right direction!

Is this not the same person who ridiculed Harvard in a recent book? See below:

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/prem/200503/douthat

I thought you had gone on record earlier criticizing him for his negative portrayal of Harvard. The book was very unkind.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A64888-2002Jan4&notFound=true

Will Gates be leaving as well? Word is, he is not making an announcement until school is out.

Byerly you would make an excellent spin editor at FOX News. I think it's a lucrative career for you. You put the yellow back into journalism.

Ah, its our self-proclaimed resident intellectual and critic, the eminent Professor Seven Night\'s!!!

You are the first expert on the press I can recall who has referred to the late Mary McGrory of the Washington Post as a "yellow journalist"!

No wonder FOX News so eagerly awaits your entrance. You have an uncanny ability to "spin" the comments of others into hypocritical points. I was not refering Mary McGrory, but how you phrase your comments in posts. If you would like I can most certainly bring them up and we can let CC judge.

let's play nice, gentlemen....

I can just see the spittle dripping from the corners of your scowling mouth as you sneer those hated words: "FOX NEWS"!!

Oh the HORROR! Need you say more? All the leftists will surely apprehend your coded message immediately!

Perhaps I should research this but, it would be helpful to have answers to the following questions:

Is Gates (the H Af/Am studies dept. chairman) still saying he will make up his mind this summer as to whether he stays or goes?

What is the total number of H Af/Am dept. faculty who have left the department since Summers' arrival?
