Cornell's School of Hotel or University of Michigan's Ross School of Business?

If anyone can help me out as soon as possible, it would be great! I have to pick a school by May 1st and I am still unsure of where I want to go!

I am a student from Michigan and I have been accepted to the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and the preferred admit for the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. Both have been my top choices for a long time, but I never thought I would come to a time where I would actually have to choose between them!

The reason that I like the School of Hotel Administration is that it is considered to be a business with a "focus on people." I have always been interested in business, and what's great is that this program fits my personality overall. At the same time, I am also unsure of the jobs that I will have the future, how happy I will be with it, as well as income. And the alumni connection as well as the overall Cornell connection is also a positive.

The Ross School of business is also great because I am getting a top 10 ranked business education for in-state tuition. Plus, Ross requires more liberal arts credit than business credits, which will give me a broader knowledge and education! If I planned on attending Ross, I will most likely minor as well. A negative about attendign Ross is that it doesn't have the hospitality factor into business, which is what I could possibly enjoy. Most undergraduates major in finance and/or go into consulting, which for me personally, I am not sure if I would enjoy those jobs. As a Ross student, I would possibly like to pursue my own unqiue and innovative business rather than finance/consulting (which as of now, seems and is far fetched for me)

Primarily I'm focusing on the programs as well as what kinds of the jobs I will have in the future, but other factors that I've also been considering are campus lifestyle, the people, etc.

Help would much appreciated! Thank you!

Is $ a big factor for you? If yes, go to UMich. If not, I’d pick Cornell.

What are you likely to do after graduating? Cornell has a strong alumni network, Hotelies go into all sorts of fields not just hospitality and the ‘Cornell brand’ is helpful in setting the tone when you’re doing business. This is what I observe from interning in an investment related company now. If you want to end up on Wall St, definitely head to Cornell. Recruiting and alumni network will help you significantly here.

However, UMich is definitely strong and you won’t be set back by that much in terms of skills. Its just the prestige that will help when you’re doing business, opening doors and such.

Guess its a bit late for you to visit the schools now. The atmosphere in Cornell will probably be more academic and competitive while UMich will be less so. Both can be fun. Where do you think you’ll fit in more?

Hotelies do all kinds of crazy things.

Cornell has the best hotel school in the world. Recruiting is outstanding. And Hotelies do seem to have a lot of fun…

I have visited both Ross and Cornell, and I like each in its own way.

Campus wise, Michigan definitely has a city environment and there is definitely always something to do there.

Money can be a factor, I just don’t want to invest myself in the wrong school because tuition costs are expensive!

As of now, I am interested in business and I am also on the creative side (I love to cook and create events, music, etc.) and enjoy working with people. I think that Cornell Hotel definitely has a mix of both. I feel that at Ross, I can maybe find that outlet as well because there are dual degrees and minors such as art, music, informatics, etc.

Ultimately this is a challenge for me because both Ross and Hotel are so great in their own ways, and as much as I know what my interests are, I’m unsure of where my interests will benefit the most.
