Corporate-Sponsored v. School-Sponsored Scholarships

Hi, I'm confused, as usual.

As a National Merit Finalist who may be considered for both a corporate-sponsored and school-sponsored scholarship, which one takes precedence? For example, would being offered a corporate-sponsored scholarship prevent me from receiving a school-sponsored scholarship? If not, if I decided not to go to the school offering me a school-sponsored scholarship, would I be eligible to receive the corporate-sponsored scholarship?

Thanks for your help. I'm sorry if my questions use the word 'sponsored' far too many times.

You can decide which NM scholarship to accept.

For instance- lets say you are accepted and decide to go to USC,[ which means you would recieve a 1/2 Tuition scholarship AND $1000 annually from National Merit Corporation] AND also you are also eligible to receive a one time $2000 corporate scholarship.

You would have the option of refusing the one time corporate scholarship and accepting the annual $1000 scholarship.

Same goes for students who are offered the one time $2500 National Merit Scholarship foundation scholarship- or any other National Merit scholarship that is administered through NMSF- you can accept the one that makes the most financial sense for you to accept.

this is how it worked for us.

NMCorp called us on the phone to strategize to get the most money.

Son took the official NMF Corporate scholarship from H’s job. He was also able to accept his undergrad’s NMF scholarship MINUS the small “official” part of $1k per year. Since the corporate NMF “official” scholarship was $2500 per year, it was better to do it this way.

Ah, thank you very much - that clears things up a lot.

One last question - does that still apply if I don’t list a first-choice college and change it later on; say, after corporate scholarships are announced?

yes.
None of the NMSF scholarship $$ is distributed until tuition $$ is due. As long as you meet the Mid-May NMSF deadline for declaring your final first choice college[ and there really is no reason to declare it until you DO know where you will be going to college.] you will be eligible for the scholarships administered by NMSF.

It’s true that you could declare your first choice any time until May. However, if you were already awarded one of the corporate scholarships, I don’t think you could switch to a college-sponsored scholarship. So, in that case, you would get the school part of the NMF package but the official National Merit part would be subtracted and you would have the NM corporate scholarship in its place.
