I corrected my fafsa yesterday, turns out I had added my fathers unemployment to his work income. A representative told me that if the unemployment is taxed it is included in the AGI. So I had mistakenly added 9,000 dollars to my family's income. I corrected this mistake and everything was fine until I noticed my EFC went from 6,050 to 7,092. I immediately contacted a fafsa representative. The first person I talked to told me that that just happens sometimes and there's nothing I could do. I then decided to talk to a different representative and this person said that the fafsa may have used the wrong EFC formula when determining my EFC. She then told me there was nothing she could do at that time since my fafsa was processing and to call back when it had. Has anyone ever heard of this happening, or heard of the explanation given to me by fafsa? I've been worrying alot about this and I would appreciate any insight given. Thanks.

What exact change did you make?

If the change you made was to the income from work number then yes that would cause your EFC to increase. The income from work number is used to calculate allowances against income for certain expenses related only to income earned from work. Reducing the income from work number would reduce the allowances, so would increase the available income and thus increase the EFC.

If you had originally reported the unemployment income as untaxed income and have now changed that, then I would expect to see the EFC go down.
