COSMOS 2015 Thread

I was wondering how much free time you had at COSMOS everyday/every week (especially UCI) to do your own thing, like per say take a short online course??

How does everyone know the scores they received on their essay of application?
funny story with mine. I applied for UCSC the day before it was due and I wrote a beautiful essay at 8:00 pm. I finished and clicked submit, then my computers internet disconnected. I literally freaked out… I had to write it again!!! :frowning:
but yay I got in

Decision: acceptwd
Campus: UCSC
Cluster: first choice cluster 7 astronomy, polar science, and climate change (bc I want to go into aerospace engineering)

GPA (UW): 4.0
GPA (W): 4.17
Grade Level: (current): 9

(Btw ATMS is like our schools honor classes, AP world is the only AP class offered to freshmen)

Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: ATMS Alg II/Trig, Spanish 2, ATMS biology, ATMS English II accelerated, AP World history, top string orchestra, varsity tennis

Extracurriculars: Founder/president of music to heal club, feminist foodies club, book club, CSF club, violin in top orchestra (4th grade to now), various outside honor orchestras, over 200 volunteer hours so far

General Essay (1-10 Scale): no idea
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): no idea
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): probably good idk
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): probably good idk

I honestly thought I would be rejected because,

  1. I’m a freshman
  2. I have no awards in science
  3. My essay sucked cause I was pissed off at 9:00 pm

Lol maybe I got lucky or had good teacher recommendations. Good luck to everyone! And to the people thinking of applying, choose UCSC!!! I heard the campus is beautiful and the activities are really fun!!!

@michellemhliu We already established that the essay “scores” are just assumptions based on our writing ability and the content we wrote about.

@puddi79 I can’t find the UCI COSMOS 2015 on Facebook?

@cjchasinglife There is very little free time, maybe an hour a day at the most assuming you go to sleep at an appropriate time. That doesn’t include time used for cluster homework, required activities (programming), or the ethics essay. At least at UCSD, I’m not sure about UCI. I wouldn’t recommend an online course while you’re there.

@cjchasinglife type in (word for word) UCI Cosmos 2015 (Unofficial)

Decision: Waitlisted, then Accepted
Campus: UCSC
Cluster: First choice #2: Nanochemistry and Nanotechnology
GPA (UW): 4.0
GPA (W): 4.2
Grade Level: (current): 11

Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: My school doesn’t have any APs, only Honors. Honors English, Honors history, Honors Math, Honors Physics, Honors Chemistry, Honors French, A+'s in all of them

Extracurriculars: Volunteering at a children’s center, at a homeless shelter, intern for Assemblywoman, swim competitively, play piano for 11 years, one of the leaders of a technology organization.

General Essay (1-10 Scale): idk
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): idk
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): idk
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): idk

Why I think I got in: I honestly have no clue but I’m pretty happy

Also, I can’t seem to find the COSMOS UCSC 2015 page on Facebook. Does anyone know if it’s been created?

@michelle426 did you end up getting accepted?

Hopefully this helps someone!

Decision: Accepted
Campus: UCI
Cluster: Second choice: #8 Genes, Genomes, and Biocontrol
GPA (UW): 3.7
GPA (W): 4.2
Grade Level: (current): 11
Scores: SAT 2360, Bio-E 720, Math 2 800

Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: AP’s: Lots of AP’s and honors classes, grades relatively low but <93 is a 3.7 at our school. Strong upward trend though.

Extracurriculars: Internship, Boy Scouts, Piano, Speech + Debate, Mock Trial, Quiz Bowl, Varsity Volleyball Captain, Tutoring

General Essay (1-10 Scale): 10
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 9
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 9 (guessing)
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 7-8 (guessing)

Why I think I got in: Scores and essays. I wasn’t expecting to get in because I was rejected last year and because of my GPA.

Looking forward to meeting some of y’all soon.

Does COSMOS send you an email after you fill out your participant forms and send it to them? I sent mine over a month ago and have had no response in my email or my portal. Hope my papers didn’t get lost in the mail

yeah I haven’t gotten any response either. I sent them a mail about 4 days ago, and they haven’t replied to that either. I’m kinda freaking out now  I was accepted to UC Davis for Cluster 3, if that helps.

No worries. They just sent a welcome email and the link to the handbook. I’m going to UC Davis Cluster 5

I called COSMOS, and they said that they send out the emails by cluster, so for those who sent in the forms, they’re probably just waiting on other students to do the same, so that they can send out a mass email.

Do you guys know the approximate acceptance rates of COSMOS are every year? I’m just wondering to see how competitive the program is

@valedictoriangod from what I can tell, depending on your cluster, acceptance rates can range from 3% to 30% every year. Bio clusters are usually the hardest to get into.

@topaz1116 I see, so my engineering cluster probably had a really high one, huh?

I just scanned my forms in; I think that works also.

@dsi411 I’m applying to the same cluster this year! May I ask what your stats were when you get in? Also, how difficult is it to get into that particular cluster? What did you talk about in your essay?

@arcticmenkey Hello there. So, I applied for the summer after my freshman year, so I didn’t have very many stats to go off of. All I had was a 4.17 weighted GPA and a 4.0 unweighted. The most difficult clusters to get into are the Biology clusters so my cluster wasn’t too hard in comparison. I don’t even remember what I talked about in my essays, which tells you it was just some pretty generic stuff. Good luck on getting in!
