Cosmos 2023

Definitely COSMOs. UCSB SRA is less prestigious in that it’s “easier” to get into because of its price (7500-ish$ vs 4000-ish$) which causes fewer applicants to apply. COSMOs is overall much more well known too. Hope this helps

UC Irvine COSMOS posted on their Instagram story yesterday that the overall acceptance rate this year across clusters on that campus was 9%.
For the UC application, under the activities section, there is an option to include “Educational preparation program”, COSMOS is one of the recognized programs that is included in the drop down box. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the others included in the drop down box, and applicants can (and should) definitely include other programs they have participated in. When my son participated in cosmos during the zoom year, the academic rigor and excellence of the program was very apparent. Students were able to attend a lecture from a recent Nobel Laureate. I’m not familiar with the other UCSB program.

My son did Rosetta Institute of Biomedical Science the summer before he did COSMOS. He also did Pathways to Stem Cell Science over the following winter break. Both programs were good opportunities to get hands-on lab work as an under-16 y.o.

Did anyone get an email for the waitlist survey? I got one but some of my friends didn’t so I’m not sure what it means.

Which campus ?

Does Cosmos participants write team research paper? Seems like SRA focus more on the research process with tangible outcome, rather than just a symposium poster.

That’s a good point, if you want to do more “research” you should probably go to SRA, however, the research isn’t really comparable to other programs like BU RISE or RSI, it’s more of a learn-how-to-do research experience (according to my friend). COSMOS focuses more on projects and hands-on learning rather than research.

Extracurriculars that I do other than stem activities (cs club president, robotics club officer, and science bowl team a member) are competitive swimming and piano. The activities i put on the application were the stem activities I had above

Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Of course! see you there (if you’re going to UCSD)

Anyone on the waitlist come off it yet?

nope

trying to see if they sent out first round of offers yet…

A friend of mine got in off the waitlist at UCI - I haven’t heard anything (UCD cluster 9)

Does anybody know how long the waitlist usually is? Thanks.
