Could Freshmen scholarships be offered to students who apply during a gap year?

I’m an Egyptian citizen and I’m currently attending an American-Diploma HS there. Unfortunately there is no GC in my school so I’m managing everything around to secure a smooth admission:D

Are you attending a public high school or a private high school. If there is no guidance counselor or college advisory, who assists the students at your school with the college application process? who writes the recommendation letters, sends out transcripts or completes the secondary school report?

It’s a private international High School.

“If there is no guidance counselor or college advisory, who assists the students at your school with the college application process? who writes the recommendation letters, sends out transcripts or completes the secondary school report?”

Well, literally no help; I do everything on my own, and even for the recommendations I had to translate a guide from the MIT to Arabic and started explaining it for my teachers on how to write a good recommendation:D

But thankfully the School’s office can mail the transcripts on its own haha

You have a problem in addition to the gap year in that case, since many colleges do not offer the same aid to international students.

Are you looking for need-based or merit-based aid? What is your intended major, and how much can you afford to pay?

“Currently” It’s likely Environmental Engineering, unless if my interests change for a 4th time! I cannot pay for more than 20K$ which I know is not going to help. So, my only hope is in high SAT/ACT scores to get a merit-based aid, and my ECs are fairly good-or that’s what I think.

I think internationals are less likely to receive need-based aid?

^ Yes. Few US colleges give need based aid to internationals.

My school doesn’t offer the AP classes already so I’m only studying them for the sake of finding my right major.

Then taking CLEP would be better anyway. You don’t have anyone to administer an AP test to you anyway. With CLEP, you just take it at a testing center, perhaps where you’re taking the SAT or ACT.

Alabama does have industrial eng’g and does award merit to int’ls. However, the last score it will accept is a score achieved by Dec of senior year.

What was your best single sitting ACT score or SAT score (include breakdown)?

@happymomof1

Can you direct this student to the place where international students can get some assistance?

If you are in your last year of high school, and you take the AP tests now, then you will have scores that you can report on your applications next fall while you are in your gap year. To the best of my knowledge, no college or university considers CLEP scores in the admissions process.

Unless you know where you intend to study, and you know how they use AP scores, and you are confident that your scores will get you the credit or advanced placement that college/university promises, there isn’t any point in taking the AP exams next spring after you have been admitted to college. Likewise, unless you know how CLEP scores will be used, there is no point in taking any of those exams. So, while you are working on your application list, check each institution’s policy about credit and/or placement based on these exams.

In Egypt, the place to get help with the college search and application process is the AMIDEAST advising center closest to where you live. There is one in Alexandria and one in Cairo: http://educationusa.state.gov/find-advising-center?field_region_target_id=&field_country_target_id=181&field_center_level_value=All Contact the counselors there. If you can’t visit in person, they will be able to give you some help by email or telephone. You also should take the time to read through the whole Education USA website. That will help you get a better understanding of the steps in the process: http://educationusa.state.gov/

Thanks a lot for the help, @happymomof1

I worked with all the advice and now things are going clear and easy!
