@mom2collegekids I honestly don’t know the answer to all these questions you’re asking me- that’s why I posted this thread, to find things out. I’m not stupid, but my high school doesn’t help their students with anything past graduating. So I come here to get some help and information.
Please understand that I’m asking questions to challenge some of your preconceived notions about things like, which doctors can practice at Boston Childrens, and which undergrad schools won’t have students bound for top med schools.
If you end up at a good school, get a top GPA, get a strong MCAT score, follow the advice her on the med school app process, you’ll likely get into at least one med school. If you do well at that med school, test well, then you’ll likely end up in a very good residency.
Don’t get ahead of yourself.
@elizajanebh If dates are still open, try to apply to few schools where you can get Merit aid. If you are National Semifinalist, here is the partial list which gives high merit aid (almost free tuition).
Alabama 149
Oklahoma 106
Arizona 121
Kentucky 129
UT Dallas 145
Nebraska 99
Ole Miss 149
Houston 189 - Full ride
NJIT - Full ride
Drexel - Full Tuition
In that way, even if your parents can afford, you can save money from UG and use it for MD, which needs around $200-250k ball park and rarely any one gets merit aid for MD.
If this student is a NMSF, then making NMF means more than free tuition at a number of the above schools.
They’re not really supposed to. That’s what your advisers in college are for.
^I think it means it’s a low-performing school that focuses on graduating students, not necessarily getting them to a 4-year college - although that doesn’t mesh with a 100K+ income family.
OP :
Your biggest issue right now is that our parents can’t pay their EFC.
You need to apply widely to find colleges that’ll will admit you.
If UMA turns out to be $23K, can your parents contribute $15K of that? If so, you’ll be okay You can take a loan, make $3000 or better each summer and do work study. Have neither you or your parenst saved anything for college? I’d still apply to a couple of other schools…try applying to a couple 100% needs met, you might get the COA down to $20K (match your EFC) somewhere. Spend a couple hours picking out schools and running the NPC and then put in a few apps, hurry now!
I am a pre-med student at Umass Amherst. Umass is getting increasingly competitive. So, if you graduate with a 3.8 ` 4.0 GPA, and get a good MCAT score, there is no reason why you wouldn’t get in to best med-schools.
^Well, it takes a lot more than just GPA/MCAT to get into medical school so there’s plenty of reasons why a 3.8-4.0 and a good MCAT score from UMass wouldn’t get into the best med school, but I think you’re right that going to UMass certainly won’t keep you out of the best med schools.
