Could I?

Hey there,

My name is T.J. Clark and I dream about going to the Naval Academy. Honestly, it wasn't until recently that I decided I wanted to serve my country and therefore go into the Naval Academy. Originally, I was just planning on applying to colleges such as Georgetown, Cornell, and Northwestern for undergrad and going there. However, I was inspired by a couple of my senior and now high school graduate friends who went into the military. It wasn't until the recent year that I became really proud of my country and the way we live.

So, realizing this, I decided I wanted to go to a service academy. Out of the three I realized I didn't think I was strong enough to go to West Point, not smart enough for Colorado Springs, but I think that Annapolis is just right.

Honestly, my freshman year was not very great with these grades:
Physical Education Foundations - C
Honors English 1 - C+ (B+, weighted)
Spanish 1 - B
Health - C
Algebra 1/T3 - C
Technical Applications - A+
Geometry - A-
Fundamentals of Business - A+
Honors Modern World History - A+ (weighted as well)
Biology - A-
Oral Communication - A+

However, I believe I turned it around a bit with the following sophomore grades:
Honors U.S. History - A+ (weighted as well)
Honors English Two - B+ (A+, weighted)
Spanish Two - B+
Integrated Geometry/Algebra 2 - B+
Global/U.S. Issues - A+
Driver's Education - B-
Chemistry - C+
AP European History - B+ (weighted, A+)
Military Topics - A+
Advanced Team Sports (P.E.) - A

In addition to these classes in the past few years I have sparingly participated in Student Council, been a dedicated member of the YMCA's Youth in Government, and volunteered for a local state representative - Minority Leader Tom Cross. So far, through just one year in Youth in Government, I have been elected 'Most Effective Lobbyist' and I am widely considered a great candidate for the offices of Secretary of State and Governor. On my ACT-Prep test I have received such ACT scores as 33 and 34. In the future I also plan on running cross country, gaining a lot more community service hours, and joining my school's newspaper and daily news program.

Also for the future, I am planning on taking classes such as:
AP U.S. History
Honors Anatomy
Honors English 3
AP Language
Honors Pre-Calc
Spanish 3
Business Law 1 and 2
Criminal Law (Pre-Law)
AP Government

While I know that Chemistry is a huge part of education at the academy, I know I can do really well if I go there. I am completely dedicated to my work and it shows. I plan on working in law and politics when I grow up and if I was to get accepted into the Academy I would major in Political Science. I am dedicated to history and social studies classes because those interest me best.

So, I ask you guys, based on your knowledge do you think I can make it or should I change a few things up? Any help is appreciated! :D

And … shot clears the bow.

Let the volley begin.

Replying to any of the ‘what are my chances’ questions posted on here is a total waste of time. However, am curious where/how you got the impression that the Naval Academy is any less challenging/selective then any other academy??? Rather bizarre set of assumptions for your first post here.

Apologies for any misunderstandings. I did not mean that the Naval Academy is inferior to the two other military academies, but simply that my skill set more aligns itself with those of the Naval Academy.

Also, I don’t mean to be rude, but if you don’t have any suggestions or help could you please leave this forum?

When you post on these forums you are asking for our advice. All we have to go on is what you post. Seeing as how this is your first post, not a lot of history for us to refer to. Saying you aren’t smart or strong enough for certain academies is such a gross oversimplification that it indicates you really don’t grasp the nature of these programs. You never did explain why you believe your ‘skills’ are more aligned with being successful at the Naval Academy.

Posting rude/sarcastic remarks to adults by someone who has just finished their sophomore yr shows a lack of maturity. You should be more respectful of the adults on here who actually have knowledge of 1 or more of these service academies and are trying to help. Answer honestly the questions you get asked and you might actually learn something about the academy.

Your resume also shows -0- sports participation…demonstrating a dedication to physical fitness is also a key to these types of programs.

I assure you that any rude behavior was not intended. I was simply wondering if anyone on this website could give me any advice as to what I could do over the next few years to increase my chances of making into the Naval Academy. Therefore, any immaturity was not intended as well.

You are correct, I have not participated in any sports programs at my school in my two years there. However, this year I am planning on trying out (and making) my school’s golf team (the talent on our golf team is not vast and I may have a leg up because I have a good relationship with the coach). Also, I am planning on doing cross country this year as well.

Again, I apologize if you thought I was being rude I assure you I meant no harm. If you would like any more information that you believe would help to understand me, please feel free to ask.

Your science area sucks, you will be compared to kids who have taken 3 AP science courses with 4 and 5s on the tests. Honors Anatomy and Basic Chemistry won’t cut it. Look in to sports. Your extra curriculars look fine. I don’t know what to tell you.

Something I forgot to mention is my plans on taking AP Chemistry, I know that the Academy recommends taking and getting good grades in Chemistry; obviously I was unable to do that. Although, honestly, I was quite good at the subject.

Thanks for the suggestions though! :D

Some things to do:

 • Read the official Naval Academy website as it has a lot of useful, factual information about what all this involves, career options, the application process, etc.
 • Talk with your parents about your desire to make the military your career. This is a life changing decision.
 • Visit the Naval Academy, take the tours, talk with people in admissions and as many current mids as possible to get a sense of what this is really like.
 • Attend a summer sports camp at the Academy to get more of an inside look.
 • Apply for NASS when eligible
 • Participate in physically demanding varsity sports to improve physical skills and overall physical fitness. Coaches think highly of those who work hard, apply themselves and are successful at what they do…whether on not the coach likes you makes no difference.
 • Participate in sport and ECA’s in high school to develop as a person and contribute to the succes of your school…NOT because they will look good on your resume.
 • Strive to take the most challening courses offered by your h.s and excel in them.

…that should be a place to start.

This one’s pretty simple. Slim/and less. Clearly your research and analytical skills are bankrupt. Your posts communicate serious ego, immaturity, and/or disingenuousness.

Absent both some change of behavior, outcomes, intel, and attitude? Wouldn’t get by the BGO. I suggest you follow in the footsteps of Forrest Gump. Maybe go to that “special school!” Really, no offense. Good luck.
