I have been receiving quite a lot of mail from this college within the past month or so (mostly just about scholarships), and have been looking into it out of curiosity. I'm from the midwest and have never heard of this college before. Aside from looking at collegeboard and the university's official web site, I don't know much about it. What sort of education do students get? What are it's strongest programs? Why would I want to consider it?

Saint Joseph's U is the Jesuit university in Phila. (one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the US) For eg. near you, might be Xavier or John Carroll or Marquette U. which are all Jesuit Catholic colleges. Saint Joseph's will be similar.
Saint Joseph's will offer a strong lib. arts education for students in all majors (i.e. required core courses) and has strong pre-professional programs. Good in business areas, particularly marketing & accounting or finance; good tradition in sciences (pre-med & health professions) and education.

Among Catholic universities in the Philadelphia area, Villanova would be ranked first in terms of competiveness, followed by St. Joseph's then LaSalle.

All three schools have fairly strong ties in the business, legal and civic communities in metropolitan Philadelphia area (including Wilmington and Camden).

I might be mistaken, but I think St. Joe's is the home of the Academy of Food Marketing, whose personnel often get quoted in the financial pages of newspapers.

If you can, get a copy of the FORBES magazine on the Forbes 400 richest people in America. A St. Joe alum wrote a great piece about the difference between donating big bucks to an already well-endowed institution (ie, the Ivy League schools) and those schools not so well endowed (just about everyone else)

SJ is a very good school, they are expensive, but will offset it with a good FA offer. You need to go thru the process there and get your final package. I could not justify nova or SJ at 38k per yr or more. thats why FA pack is so critical. but a good school, run by a very good president, and as you know, leadership is everything.

Here's my two cents on Saint Joe's. It is a well respected school in the Philadelphia area that mainly competes with Villanova. Location wise, its excellent. A few minutes away from downtown and a 5 minute walk from Larry's Cheesteaks... Located on City Ave which is a busy street with all sorts of shops and fast food places. Educational wise, St. Joe's is #151 in the US New Ranking for Business. Finance is quite popular and thats what I intend to major in. (I heard their program is state of the art.) Internships should be somewhat easy given the location. (NYC and Newark nearby). Sports wise its D1 and their basketball team is pretty good. (Atlantic 10 conference) Overall, the city of Philadelphia is amazing! From the Rocky Statue to the Eagles, it has everything one can want in a big city. Also, dont listen to the people about how dangerous the city is. It's actually quite safe, after all, it's the city of brotherly love. If I get enough FA, I'll most likely end up here.
