Hi! I just got accepted to Grinnell(RD). My mums not too keen to send me …
i really need help to convince her. She believes that careers are made in big cities and is very keen on sending me to a big state college in a city. (im an international student ) (shes still keen to learn more about Grinnell though like before we make the final decision). Some counsellors around have told her that small LACs are very good for personality development but thats it…
i really want to go to a liberal arts college and explore and live within a small community. I come from a really big city and i just really want to be in small town like Grinnell.
Also the opportunities to explore courses (as well as no general education requirements) that Grinnell provides really call out to me.
could you please tell me about the post graduate and career opportunities( outside Grinnell too) after graduating and internship opportunities while studying. Im really looking to learn more and explore myself(which i feel would be tough at a state college ) (stories of kids transferring like freshman year really freak me out ).Grinnells vibe just really calls out to me and i really want to attend this school.
For international students, what matters is if your college or university can help you find internships and eventually a job after graduation where you can use your OPT. Being in a city is not going to help with that. The college/university network will.
So, contact the international students office and the career center at each campus, and ask where their international graduates have found work for their OPT. This is really important if you want to have work experience in the US before you return home. Every year lots of international graduates can’t find an employer who will hire them for their OPT and they have to leave the US shortly after they graduate.
What do you want to do after college?
Here you go! Although this links to a Reed page, it lists the undergrad colleges sending the most students on to PhD programs in several fields and overall. Grinnell looks amazing on these lists!

Grinnell also has better resources than almost any college in the nation. It ranks 11th on the per-student endowment, higher than some of the Ivy League colleges:

So, if your mother wants you to attend a college with among the nation’s best resources for undergraduates and with among the best reputations at graduate schools, Grinnell is a great choice!
@intparent Hi, I plan intern for a while, or head straight for masters [either in the states or Canada].
I was getting at the same thing as @TheGreyKing — Grinnell is a strong feeder to PhD programs. If you are looking to work in the US after graduating, @happymomof1 has good advice above.
As @happymomof1 suggested, contact Grinnell’s international student office and explain your situation. You are not the first international student who’s had to convince their parents about Liberal Arts colleges.
The international student office might be able to connect you with alumni, current students, or faculty from your mother’s home country who could address her concerns.
I think you need to find out how far your grades fell before you try to convince your mom to let you go to Grinnell. If you were so ill that you’re concerned about being rescinded, as your other thread indicates, you have to worry about getting your high school grades up first.
@austinmshauri Hii… my exams are overs I’m taking the cbse board exams so my exam results come out a month after deposit day which I why I was asking. And there are no improvement exams… just retests for individuals that couldn’t meet the minimum passing criteria. (Which is quite rare )
