Could this be counted as an extracurricular activity?

Over the past 2 years, I've spent 600 hours working to develop and write code for my school's website. The majority of that time is spent in a class designed specifically for this activity, so it doesn't really count as extracurricular. However, 200 of those hours were spent on my own time, voluntarily, not inside a class.

My question is: Could those 200 hours of work be counted as an extracurricular activity on my college applications? Or does the fact that the majority of the activity itself takes place in a class disqualify it completely?

And if not, is there anywhere else that I can mention it? I definitely feel, given the amount of time and effort I have spent on it, that it has had a great influence on my character, aspirations, and outlook on life.

Thanks.

Will your GC or teacher recognize the additional time you put in outside the class? If so it should be an EC.

Sounds like a lot of homework!

If the time was spent voluntarily, not on assigned class work or homework, then yes, it’s an EC and by all means, report it. Just because students take an art or music class and does art or music during class time, doesn’t mean they can’t also create art or make music in their free time and count it as an EC.

D2’s MUN was a class, but she also spent a lot of time outside of the class for MUN, so she did list it as an EC.
