We liked “The Insider’s Guide to Colleges,” put out by the staff of the Yale Daily News, because it had lots of quotes from students.

This poster is supposedly an international student residing in Hong Kong. Parent or kiddo? Who knows?

Read the post from Happymomof1. Her information should be very helpful to you. These folks advise students from other countries. That is what they do.

I would not use Colleges That Change Lives as a source of better schools- ALL colleges change lives. For someone from outside the US they may not be knowledgeable enough about US colleges to know that much of the same is available elsewhere as well.

re post #15 and the response to it. OP (original poster)- in the US religion is not as prevalent as you may think. Many here on CC do not think of a god at all in the search for colleges, even if they are religious to any degree.

Freedom of religion includes NOT believing in any religion as well as being allowed to choose whichever beliefs you want to. Presidents often include statements that will please constituents- he has his beliefs and many do believe in a god so it pleases them to hear that. Hearing Obama make that statement does not mean US policy officially supports any religious beliefs.

You might get some specific suggestions on this forum of colleges to research if you post some information about what your child wants to study, what kind of grades they have, and what the test scores are (or perhaps a guess what they will be if your child has done some practice tests). Also a little information about their personality and activities that interest them may help. And keep in mind that admission may be more difficult for foreign students. You also need to look at what tests are required, and make sure you check if there are any additional requirements for foreign students (TOEFL perhaps).

There are regional cultural differences in the US, which the OP may not be aware of. You may want to look into this a little if it matters at all to you. Regarding religion in particular, you will tend to find more religious people in the south.

Some parents hire a college coach to help find good “fit” options. It seems that could be a good idea from long distance.

Often financial factors are important. Be aware that some of the private colleges cost $60,000 per year.
