i just tried the counselor o matic feature at princetonreview website and my match schools are cornell, dartmouth, carleton, georgetown, harvey mudd, johns hopkins, NYU, carnegie mellon, duke, northwestern, tufts, u of chicago....just to name a few....

my safties are UI urbana c., university of texas at austin, uconn, u of wisconsin madison, case western, florida state, northeastern, american, u of maryland college park, university of washington...just to name a few...

here's the funny thing. my gpa is 2.9, my sat score is 1740.... so i ask myself.... what the hell??? btw, im from south america.

so is counselor o matic flawed, or should i trust it and actually apply to some of these schools?

I've read on these boards that the counselor-o-matic is very generous with the schools it lists as matches. I don't know about the safety schools it lists though.

I wouldnt really trust counselor-o-matic. It has one hell of a strange definition for matches ( it gave me harvard, g-town and Upenn as matches!!). I would think its just best if you post your stats on the chances thread. People here will give you a good iea of what you can or can't get. But don0't let them discourage you, if you have a life long dream of going to any Ivy or hard-to-get-into-school by all means applyh there

Not a matter of trtrust...actually counselor o matic is not accurate in many of its calculations ..what i mean is that there is weightage to factors that are not so important and stuff like that..

As per CC it sa bit too harsh but that is gud

I think the counselor-o-matic is a little iffy. It takes into account some things that AREN'T given consideration for int'l kids. Like aid. They ask if money is a major/moderate/little concern. Great, so they may put in schools that have great aid in your list, but it's for nationals, you know?

I'd say take their list with a grain of salt and also compare your SAT scores of CR + M with their old SAT profiles, such as on CollegeBoard.com and see how close it is.

But I think CC is an okay use of moderation when it comes to making your list of universities, but I think most, if not all, of the advice and help come from those who still are slightly riding on the stereotype of "top tier" and whatever else schools.
