Counselor Recommendations?

Do counselor recs matter? The only reason why I’m asking is because I’m slightly concerned with the competency of my new counselor this year…the counselor I’ve had for three years just retired so my school scrambled to get a new one and I’m not very sure of his experience as a high school counselor…

Colleges recognize that some counselors do not know all their students well. Here is what MIT says:

Many counselors don’t know their students well enough to write a meaningful recommendation (can have too many students, be new to the school etc.). I would not worry about it. If the counselor has not written the rec yet, you mane an appointment to meet with him/her to discuss your college choices and at that time you can ask if there is anything you can provide (ex. resume, list of activities) to help him/her write your recommendation. Also be sure your teacher recs are from people who know you well.
