My counselor is amazing. I go to an inner city school in a struggling district with 4000 kids and she know everyone by name and face. If she needs to tell you something she will hunt you down because she knows that by the time you realize theres a problem and decides to come to her its too late. The first 3 months of school are reserved for seniors only se helps them with the paper work and makes ure all of the applications are out ON TIME along with FASFA and everything else…

A lot of people in my school don’t apply to top schools mostly because like I said I’m in a struggling district, my district is actually very poor s my school is like a technical school so students go into liberal arts house and can graduate with degrees in cosmeotology, autobody, culinary, and the 180 hour nursing internship etc. (all assistant degrees). But there are a handful of kids who apply to top schools and I think last year or the year before idr, a girl got a full ride to harvard, so yeah.

The counselors at my school have trouble doing the bare minimum of their job: filling out their parts of scholarship and college applications, getting AP tests, sending out transcripts, etc.

This year a girl requested a transcript to a college (she gave the counselor an envelope with her full name on it and everything), and the counselor sent the college the transcript for a junior girl with the same first name. I’m glad that mine has only messed up my scholarship applications and AP tests.

I go to a big public high school with 3000 kids in state that ranks 48th in education; needless to say, our counselors aren’t that great. I didn’t even know who mine was until senior year, when I started working on college apps.

I don’t know how it works at other schools, but students here have to fend for themselves when it comes to selecting colleges. If you want any help from your counselor, you have to harrass them to get an appointment. I stalk my counselor’s office daily, but she’s always talking to some schloozer who’s on the verge of dropping out. I don’t understand why the guidance department puts so much time and effort into kids that don’t care.

Honestly though, my counselor is better than some of the others. She actually required us to write resumes before requesting letters of rec, and she took the time to interview us too. I had to send out all my own transcripts though. One of my friends approached her counselor about getting prepared for college, and her counselor said (I quote) “Oh don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”
