Countdown til April 1st

I wish I lived on the east coast. Academics in California SUCK, seriously. Never move here lol.

I comprehend that, but I still had the option to pick a time zone, so I opted to choose that one.

I think that it depends on what school you attend.

academics in louisiana are definitely the worst…

Actually, California does suck. Its English standard is atrocious. It does not teach grammar properly and it focuses more on reading comprehension than on anything else. And for math, some teachers are good, some teachers are bad. But the worst part is that students rely too much on teachers that they never look in their textbook to further their understanding for math. However, that’s my perspective toward my school.

louisiana has a 40 percent high school graduation rate…

The data support the conclusion that California does, indeed, suck—but Louisiana is worse. In fact, only DC is worse.

Well at least you have a higher chance getting into the UCs, which are amazing schools.

couldn’t agree more about california…aren’t we like the 49th or 50th ranked state in terms of education?? and the stupid state decides to cut down spending by reducing funds for education. how awesome…

Sources say Mississippi has the worst overall schooling… but I’m not one to judge. It makes sense though. :]

superexcited: Make that past tense and it might have some truth.

Well 60% of our students don’t even pass our California High School Exit Exam that consists of elementary math and vocabulary!

@thrill3nit3. Yeah, California is being hella stupid for cutting the education budget.

28 teachers are being cut at my school. Some are the important art teachers. Some are the AP teachers. Some are the more competent English teachers. Now, next year, the English department will suffer due to the new rookie English teachers.

CAHSEE -really amazing that so many people failed. Moreover, it’s a freaking waste of time when I took it.

well, kids here care about more about hookah and mj than algebra, that’s for sure…

I don’t think that our high schools are that low.

Perhaps there is some form of inbalance amongst the schools.

[America’s Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/high-schools/2009/12/09/americas-best-high-schools-gold-medal-list.html)

California schools compose 20 of those spots.

The budget cuts are unfortunate. I think that California has an average of 25 students per class.

Wartsandall: You’re looking at anecdotal evidence.

Sure, California does have some great schools. After all, as the most populous state, it’s bound to have some superb schools to educate the rich and famous.

But the average high school? It sucks.

Glad I live in Vermont, which doesn’t have a single “best” high school, but where every school is at least decent.

I wish I had a good high school near my place…but too bad my school district sucks nuts

@Wartsandall
Some of them are charter schools. I believe they don’t adhere to the California standards. Moreover, the ranking is based on AB/IB, which is narrow.

My english teacher said that Fairfax, Virginia is the bastion of education. True?

I’m not trying to say that we have superb academics, I’m just stating that not all of our schools are atrocious. Charter schools do receive some public funding.

The west coast just sucks in general. I can’t wait to come to the northeast for college.
