Couple of Questions, If Answered Would Be Really Helpful :)

Hey guys so I really like Rice, maybe not as my first choice, but definitely up there in the top 5. The thing is, I have a couple of questions if any current student/person who knows a lot about the school.. :)

1) Is there diversity at Rice? Do you meet people from all around the world or is it very American student populated?
2) How is the social scene? Of course the residential colleges always have things going on, but how is the party life? I am into partying and really want a school that has something going on every weekend or so, whether it be a party or an event or something of that kind.
3) There's only about 3200 undergraduates, isn't that a bit less? Or is the campus always buzzing?
4) Is it possible to do Film and Pre-Med?
5) How is the campus? Pretty/Ew/Nice? :)

Pleaseeeee someone help me out! I really like the school :)

It’s a good idea to do a little research before posting your questions. Saves us all time and energy! Go to the Rice website and watch the virtual tour - answers number 5. Read the online stats for student population - lists all the countries and number of students from each country - answers number 1 Go to the website and explore the academic departments and requirements for different majors…answers number 4 (BTW - I’m pretty sure that Pre-Med is not a major…just a set of classes that most med schools require)
As for number 2 - campus is buzzing. Both my kids wished there were more hours in the day to do all the things they wanted to do on campus. HTH.

As anziousmom said, Pre-med is not a major. But yes, you can do Film and Pre-med. You will be a film major with a Pre-med tacked on

Simply, yes.

if you want to party, you WILL find a party. Social scene is good if you like partying, especially if you mention it in your questionnaire after getting accepted (so you can be placed in the “party hall”, although you dont have to live there to party with them, their doors are always open.
3.its small, but dont let that make you think its a calm place.

no clue

Its a beautiful campus with lots of history and whatever behind it.

^quick 30 second answers. Hope it helps at least a little.

I’ll take a shot at your questions. I love this place, but I’ll be unbiased.

1.) Rice is around 10% international. I don’t have numbers for you, but most of our internationals do seem to be from China.
2.) At Rice you will be able to get your party on quite literally every day of the week, somewhere on campus. It is a wet campus. This is VERY different from most other peer institutions. My friend (at a peer institution) played kickball last night while I dressed up for a Candy themed dance party and enjoyed my weekend. The best part is that the social scene here is very, VERY inclusive. There is no pressure to drink if you don’t want to, and I’ve yet to encounter a party that wasn’t “open-door”. There is a reason this place is #1 for quality of life.
3.) 3200 is not very large, but it doesn’t FEEL small here. There are is no shortage of classes, or opportunities.
4.) When I was a prospective student, my host was a film/premed. It is very possible!
5.) Take the virtual tours!

PM me if you have any other questions!

I don’t know if I would say most are. I know that for the current sophomore class the percentage of international students from South Korea is actually higher than that from China.

Interesting. Anyways, here is data from a little while ago

[Rice University | Demographics, International](http://www.professor.rice.edu/professor/Demographics_International.asp?SnID=1548914842)

The profile of new students is now buried a couple of clicks deep on the web site so I thought it might be useful to add a link here:
[Rice University | Undergraduate Admission: Future Owls](http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Freshman_Profile.asp?SnID=173379121)

Last year, 112 of 894 of the incoming freshmen were foreign nationals (12.5%)
China was the largest source (44 or 39% of the internationals; 5% of total admits)
S. Korea was next (33 or 29%)
The rest (29 total internationals) were citizens of 20 other countries.

thank you MSmom&Dad. Was looking for that, but missed it.

1) Is there diversity at Rice? Do you meet people from all around the world or is it very American student populated?

When I was a freshman, it used to be not very diverse. But each year since, the class just gets rapidly diverse. For instance, I was one of the 6 asians at my college first year, my last year, there were at least 15 asians in the freshman class. The year before my freshman year, there was only 3, and the year before 1. Leebron has really done a good job of expanding the diversity at Rice.

2) How is the social scene? Of course the residential colleges always have things going on, but how is the party life? I am into partying and really want a school that has something going on every weekend or so, whether it be a party or an event or something of that kind.

Party life is also pretty awesome. There is always a party somewhere, and there are party colleges that are known for always having parties. With 11 colleges, you know there’s bound to be at least 11 parties on a Saturday night.

3) There’s only about 3200 undergraduates, isn’t that a bit less? Or is the campus always buzzing?

I like that size, but it’s up to you.

4) Is it possible to do Film and Pre-Med?

Pre-Med, you’ll find a plenty of folks. As for Film, the film program here pretty much sucks, as the filmmaking class is only offered once a year and even then competition to get in is pretty stiff. It’s taught by a disorganized man whose last film was a shoddy documentary 20 years ago, who has a british accent, and who doesn’t give a damn about whether the students learn. If you want to do double-major, I definitely know one Freshman who wants to do the same but is currently re-considering because the grading for filmmaking is really arbitrary.

5) How is the campus? Pretty/Ew/Nice?

I consider it pretty nice, and self-contained.

to answer the diversity question, i count as an international student (even though i spent the last four years here but nah) so i had to go to the international orientation. i can give u some newer information on diversity for you. apparently this year’s class has most international students in the university’s history, as president leebron (he mentioned in the speech) is trying to increase the international population at rice. i’d say they all mingle with other students pretty well, except maybe the ones from china…
