For years, I have studied coupon patterns and have gained a ton of knowledge about many stores. I often give my friends guidance to help them save money when buying things. The idea came to my mind to start either a blog or instagram to share my knowledge and observations with other teens. I’d probably include daily posts about current deals too. Would colleges acknowledge this a substancial extracurricular? I wouldn’t want to spend 5 hours a week on it if they just dismissed it…
Don’t start anything if your purpose is to look good on your application. Start whatever because you WANT to do it.
I actually think it can be a wonderful topic for an essay. If I were your essay reader, I would put you on a IN pile because I am an avid couponer! (I might call you even for an coupon advise)
Seriously, you should write about the joy of couponing! It shows your organization skill, research skill, leadership skill (if you invite your friends to the activity) and humbleness and frugality.
Good luck!
It could be a good essay topic and it could be a good community service project. “i donated 10,000 toothbrushes and bushel of soap to the Women’s Shelter.” I’ve seen the couponing shows where people combine their couponing skills with charities (Ronald McDonald House, showing a teen home how to stay on budget with coupons)
But I agree - don’t do it unless you enjoy it. If an admit officer just saw ‘couponing blog, 5 hours per week’ it probably would mean very little to him.
