Courses I MUST NOT miss?

Hello,

As a committed Terp, I am here to ask fellow Terps what courses there are that I MUST NOT miss (either because it is required like COMM107 or because it is very entertaining/worth learning).

Please note that I am a CS major.

Also, starting this summer, I am planning to take some courses in a community college nearby in summers every year (if I don’t have any internships/jobs or anything hindering me). What Gen Ed category do you think I should take care of in CC?

My plan for now is to take care of DSNL (because I heard that lab courses are very tough), DSNS (b/c I hate biology/chem/physics), 2 DSHS (b/c I hate history), COMM107 equivalent, DVUP as a whole (or as much credit as UMD allows outside of UMD), and take the remaining Gen. Eds in UMD. What do you think about my plan? If there is any easy yet fun course in, say, DSHS, then please let me know so that I can adjust my plan!

Thank you.

@HardOREasy - I can’t really comment courses not to miss, but I do want to point out the UMD has policies and rules regarding taking classes at other institutions, including CCs, for credit at UMD. Among other things you must get permission from your department in advance and not all outside courses are accepted by UMD, even if the course has the same or similar name.

The last link below, will allow to search the CC that you plan to attend to see what courses UMD will accept. Good Luck

Like SoofDad said, taking classes at a cc is tricky. You are going to have limitations and finding equivalent classes may be the most boring thing you can do. If you just take DSNL as an example, open this link and see all of the options available at Maryland for this fall that fulfill this requirement https://ntst.umd.edu/soc/gen-ed/201708/DSNS
There are options in many different departments, so you are not stuck with something totally boring…!!! I mean you can go for dinosaurs or nutrition or natural disasters (earthquakes floods fires) or CBRN weapons or astronomy or even a class on mushrooms! Really, Maryland offers the best variety of classes for fulfilling their general education requirements.

People at UMD say that as an incoming freshman, you can take CC courses to transfer in as credits, as long as the courses transfer over (you can check this using the transfer credit database link posted by SoofDad), as an incoming freshman without contacting an advisor, but, once you get to UMD, taking courses at CC over the summer will be difficult because you have to contact your advisor to get it approved.

For the interesting classes thing, I’d ask on the UMD reddit to get answers, since most current students hang out on there, rather than here on College Confidential.
