@Singersmom07 , that must be very scary. Hoping you get good news after testing or that at least they just have a very mild case.
I found out that three relatives so far have tested positive but had mild cases. MO, NC, and NY. A MO relative said he’s seeing almost no mask wearing in his area and is very discouraged.
I have a 23-year-old relative whose birth father was hospitalized with COVID-19. Her brother got a mild case. Yet she posted in my Facebook thread: “I just can’t let myself be paranoid about it, I just keep on living the life that I did before COVID.” When I pushed her on it, she admitted she does wear a mask and social distance, but still. It’s discouraging.
I saw someone on TV who said his relative had died of COVID but he wasn’t going to be wearing a mask. Is this a function of people just not being able to admit a stand they have taken is wrong? Leadership at the top in our country has been modeling that for years-never EVER admit you are wrong.
I know some who take a religious stance - God decides who lives and who dies, so there’s no need to do anything.
Interestingly enough, they still wear seat belts and need guns to protect themselves, just in case.
Seems God only decides with Covid. Beyond that He needs help.
Personally, I think you’re right that no matter what happens some folks don’t want to admit they’re wrong when they’ve been so adamant about being right.
A friend of a friend tested positive. But her status was only discovered when she went to the ER with a broken foot. So no symptoms at all.
Us old geezers here will remember “Lemon Tree” and the earlier version of “If I had a Hammer” (before Peter, Paul and Mary ). Trini Lopez died of COVID today.
Unfortunately, the tenants who are leaving our rental house texted us this morning and their H has very typical Covid symptoms (high fever, aches, low BO, etc). He was tested and sent home to quarantine, but his test results won’t be back for 10-14 days.
Fortunately, we’ve had no in person contact with them, nor have we been in the house. They are currently living in the house they bought, not ours, but they still have things to get out of ours and won’t be doing it for a couple more weeks.
I’m glad Covid naturally dies on surfaces given time. At this point I doubt we’ll have the place on the market until the end of Sept instead of in the next week or two as we had hoped. If the market isn’t good at that time, it means we’ll have to keep renting it instead.
The tenants are youngish parents - kids are probably middle school aged now - so they should pull through. At the moment the mom is understandably quite worried about her H.
Considering the German heart study and knowing what our son has been experiencing, I’d be worried too. Even if the rest of the family is asymptomatic there could be lagging heart issues all around. We’ll definitely keep the house off the market until it’s safe. We don’t want Covid. I don’t want anyone else catching it because of me either.
@Creekland—that maa as my days till a result??!! That makes no sense at all. I’m out in the boonies snd 4-5 days is the most. Can you offer to pay for a quick test? It’s $80 out of pocket here
We know a couple who does VRBO (superlative, magnificent lodging with private beach, pool, impeccable place, anyone want to come this way, I’ll give you the listing to check out) who had to close it down for all of July when it was booked solid at peak prices due to COViD19 and that was even with the good luck of showing positive very quickly, and paying for 3 rapid COVID tests for self and wife. Yeah, $480. They had a personal guest there on 4th July who had Covid. She told them July 7, and they got moving quickly. Still a month of lost income. 11 positives out of a group of 19 people, by the way from having one person at that gathering. No one seriously ill, but all quarantined for 14 days. That’s what happens when you get hit with the virus even when no immediate health issues other than a week of flu/cold/fatigue symptoms.
@cptofthehouse With all of the symptoms the man has and with our area getting a lot of new cases in the past 2-3 weeks, we’re just assuming he’s positive.
I feel fortunate that we’ve been totally communicating via the phone - and now text.
I also feel fortunate that he got ill after they had started living in their new place, but considering one is most contagious prior to having symptoms we’re assuming he’d been in the place continuing to move their stuff while he was contagious.
They want (and have) until the end of August to be moved out. I had hoped to get a realtor in and have any repairs scheduled to list it quickly as soon as they were done. At this point though, I’m assuming end of Sept will be the first time I want to even think about venturing inside of it - and that’s if they’re out the end of August. If the whole family gets sick and needs 2-3 weeks of recovery time (or more if the heart issue is also involved), they may need (and hopefully pay for) longer access. Time will tell.
And yes, it’s super frustrating to be told they won’t get test results back for a 10-14 days. (It’s in their letter from health center - a major health center around us.) But I’m not sure even a negative test would change my current plans. Too many with it test negative and he has all the classic symptoms. They have kids. They’ve been out and about doing things (whole family). It seems as black and white as one can get without an actual test result.
@Creekland , I’m sorry you got hit that way. Glad you’re on it. Yes, the Health Depts can be so very slow. It was the case here too. Not 10 days for a result but in other aspects in getting the place reopened. I stay grateful when no one gets a disaster out of these hits.
So now I know two people who have died from Covid. The first was a good friend’s 86 yo mother. The second was more shocking, an acquaintance from when I was active in the high school athletic booster club, a woman my age with no health problems.
Other than the carpenter who worked on our re-model, no one I know has had COVID. I’m crossing my fingers that this continues.
Good news from my brother’s house. They all had tested positive. Their doctor treated them at home with the controversial drug combo and they are all recovered. My 95 yr old mother never had more than a cough and fatigue. Feeling very relieved now.
The only two I know IRL (have had personal interactions with) who have had Covid (that I know about) are my lad and our tenant. I know of more folks than that (relatives/friends of others). I don’t know anyone personally who has died from it. I know of people who died via others.
I suspect I would probably know more if it were more public, but I understand folks not wanting the stigma of it, plus for me, not going to school shortens my grapevine of news.
A local man just passed away Wednesday from it and made the news. He was a long time vendor at the local car track. We don’t care for car racing, so I didn’t know him. That’s the only one famous enough to make local news as far as I know, though others in our county and the one right next door have died per our state’s numbers.
Just heard from a friend from the YMCA that his wife died today - she had cancer not Covid, but Covid definintely complicated her treatment and means we haven’t seen him in person in months. Sucks.
@Singersmom07 A friends’s relative had to go to another state to get that controversial drug combo…and the patient is recovered and back home. What is going on with that!!!
I am in NY and know 3 people who died of COVID. One was an 80 year old man in NJ, the husband of a grad school friend of ours, the second was a 75 year old co-worker of mine and the third was a lovely young woman from my company’s HR department, who was in her mid-30’s. The last one hit me hard. I interviewed with this young lady when I applied for a promotion last year and really liked her, even though I didn’t get the job.
I wear my mask and social distance all the time.
What’s the controversial drug combo?
@oldfort, presumably hydroxychorolquine, perhaps in combination with zinc and azithromycin.
