CRANBROOK SCHOOLS college admissions

Anyone know how the top third of Cranbrook School grads do compared to top New England or New York prep schools in getting into the Ivies + MIT/Stanford + Wiilliams/Amherst/etc?

Would love to hear the input for canbrook school…

My daughter applied Cranbrook, Kingswood this year and we are waiting on notification on tomorrow M10-16. What we have learned re: college matriculation at this school is they put their money where there college prep is. They have a staff of five FULL TIME college counselors that have experience getting the students into the best schools for them. Their web site gives a year by year list of college matriculation. http://schools.cranbrook.edu/page/College-Prep/College-Counseling/Results

Yes there are Ivies such as Brown, Columbia, Harvard and Yale as well as a host of excellent LA(yes Williams and Amherst & many top tier schools. I see Cranbrook as having an excellent college prep model that is unique from the other NE or traditional prep schools. Rather than being coed or single sex, they gradually bring boys and girls together which has proven successful for many years, which is proven by the host of very accomplished and distinguished alumni. You can compare the above data with NE schools and make your own assessment. Quite frankly I think people are so hung up on “the best” being in an area that one misses out on the precious gems that pound for pound may give more to students than high SAT scores and a competitive education. MHO.

@KinestheticKT did you visit the school? Reading from their website and comparing to other NE schools, Cranbrook seems a bit relax and less rigor. Did you feel that way during your visit?

@msvmp27 not yet. I am not a fan of the website. I just read all I could find about the school. I felt like the schools strongest area was the college counseling. I believe that it just may take a different approach or method for getting in the grit. I felt the curriculum may benefit from some innovation. Yet yearly Cranbrook produces college ready students with SAT scores that show growth from the average SSAT scores Required. That definitely counts for something be instilled. What about the upper school website made you get a sense of less vigor?

my judgment is only from the website. having said that, will definitely give a try to get the sense of fit by attending the class during the tour.

@msvmp27 would enjoy your feedback afterwards.

My son is currently a sophomore at Cranbrook. If you have questions, I can try and answer them for you.

@cranbrookdad thank you. Is your son day or boarding? What is your opinion of the vigor of this school? I know they are planning on building a new fine arts complex. Alot of the buildings and areas are historic landmarks. How is the campus?

He is a boarder from Chicago, the academics are challenging (a first for him) but not overwhelming once you figure out some time management skills. Everyone one is very supportive and helpful. The campus is absolutely beautiful and needs to be seen to truly appreciate it. There is an Art Museum and Science Museum on the campus and available for student use. The surrounding area is also very nice with a lot of things for the kids to do… My son has also made friends with some of the day students so he keeps busy on the weekends as well.

Thanks @cranbrookdad. Anything you would change? And very important question, how does your son like the food?

Thanks @cranbrookdad does your son get FA in the school? How often does the dorm close and all the kids have to leave the campus?

Anything I would changes? No not really He is happy and thriving there so I pretty much just leave him alone. I do have to call him once in awhile to tell him to keep up with his homework. The dorms close on the regular holidays, Thanksgiving, Winter Holiday Break, Spring Break, that’s pretty much it. Yes I am pretty sure everyone has to be out of the dorms by 6:00pm of the first gay of the break.

Yes my son has a merit scholarship and some additional FA. He is ok with the food, he says he gets bored with the selections sometimes

Excellent @cranbrookdad thanks for your response.
