On a tour of one of the Ivies, a girl asked, “Is this a hard school to get into?”
It was really unavoidable. There were literally people protesting in the streets all over Portland it was all over the news. I don’t think presenter was wrong to mention it. And I don’t think she was offensive at all. I was happy that the kids upset were being supported. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.
The weather question seems to come up a lot. I visited a CT school and someone from CA asked if it got really cold. I saw the mom later and said yes, it gets really cold and they should consider that before coming to an east coast school.
I remember someone posting here on CC a year or two ago about a question asked during an information session at Boston University. The parent was concerned about BU’s reputation for grade deflation. The parent wondered if that would hurt the student’s chances of transferring to a better school.
Speaking of post grad jobs, the asst director for a top midwestern was asked to talk about career services. Blank look. She stumbled, admitted she didn’t know anything about that, but said,
I do know they’re planning to build a center.
On top of that, she had brought two local alums/gals to talk. One admitted she couldn’t find a job, so was being a nanny and it was “ok.” The other was unemployed. Great impression on families in a tony Boston suburb.
It’s a top college that, as far as I can tell, has great career advising. But that night was a major fail.
I think we just found a new litmus test for who should and should not apply to Reed.
“Can you major in cosmetology here?” and,
From a father on a tour of a women’s college:
“What does “unisex restroom” mean?” - after the tour group had just walked by one.
