Does having creative ECs make one stand out?

Yes they do!

Only if you emphasize it.

If you have something truly unique, definitely write about it in your essays.

Do you have to be good for it to really have an impact.. actually im choosing to write an essay about another activity..

What are creative EC's????? Lakers08 can you offer some examples?

Learning a certain dialect of a language, composing music for a certain instrument, learning an unusual instrument (mandolin, banjo, lute..)news reporter for community newspaper...

yeah wow a dialect cool ...for impact i'd just group your ec's by similarity,. I did a little resume to summarize my stuff in an easily digestible format. Try to keep the sequence logical, like a job resume) and my categories were:

(name address etc) (then go to the school stuff)
Academic: (advanced courses, list ap courses and test scores, unusual classes like i highlighted my 2 years of Latin and 3 years of Japanese here)
Awards and Recognition: (school based awards like science fairs)
Athletics: bullet points (all my athletics were recreational)

Extracurricular Activities

Theater: (list plays title year whether student directed) bullet points (strong area of interest)
Presidential Campaign Activities: (describe BRIEFLY)
Model UN: (describe BRIEFLY)
Student Government: (I listed 5 separate student gov. activities and described briefly because this is an area of interest.)
Community Service: (only 2 different areas, but major involvement in each so i noted some separate activities in this category like City Year, planning and construction of low cost housing)
Employment: (summer jobs)
Enclosed Portfioio: list enclosures if any.

I think if you are intentional about how you group activities they may have more impact due to the critical mass . eg it was easy to see I concentrated on theater and student government. and my strongest community service activities were related to politics and urban development.

Do the same with your music activities. Use headers, bullets, bold type and spacing to highlight what you want the adcom to focus on.

and as far as the common app goes...fill out the commpon app and also submit a supplement that YOU design to show off your strengths. I think if you present a beautiful, well organized and logical picture of yourself the adcoms will study it or use it to cross reference with the common app. the worst they can do is throw it out... Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
