Creative Writing

Does anyone know anything about the creative writing department at Columbia? I'm curious to see how rigorous it is and how NYC enhances the offerings.

Sorry if this is a little vague, but any information is helpful!

Columbia's undergrad major in creative writing is new but already has a great reputation, with its MFA program celebrated as one of the top in the country. The faculty, with names like Mark Strand, is outstanding.

I REALLY wish I could take a triple major in Creative Writing, Film Studies, & Economics. It's got a great reputation and apparently a well-connected staff.

Unfortunately that might be too much of a stretch since I'm a transfer so I'm settling for a double in FS and Econ. Hopefully I get to add a CW minor to it. :(

Their staff is amazing! And because the admissions are rigorous, they hopefully weed out all the people who write about wizards and talking cats! Well, except me. They let me in. But my talking cats are a vehicle for satire, so it's cool. Totally cool!

theres an admissions process? is it in place for the minor too? what does it consist of?

Keith - can freshmen apply for/take intermediate workshops if they have had workshop experience and their writing sample is up to par?

I wouldn't know. I just know the teachers are good.

Thank you guys! I'm too young to know for sure where I want to go for college, but I plan on pursuing a career in writing if all goes well and I'm looking for a top college with a top program.
