I will be attending UMD as freshman this fall and majoring in physics. I also received a 5 on the AP Physics C - Mechanics Exam last year and found out that this gives me credit for PHYS161, according to UMD’s AP Exam credit chart. The chart also mentions “Physics C exams fulfill major requirements in Biological Science, Engineering, or Physics” so I assumed that this allows me to be exempt from an introductory mechanics course. However, the physics major instead requires PHYS171 as an introductory mechanics course (not PHYS161), yet the course description for PHYS171 says “Credit only granted for: PHYS141, PHYS161, or PHYS171”. I’m not sure what this means, but is there any chance that credit for PHYS161 correlates to credit for PHYS171 as well? And, even with credit for the AP Physics Mechanics Exam, will I still have to take an introductory mechanics course, or will I be able to move onto the next level of physics?
