I’m going to ask someone at the Career Development Center the same question, but I thought I’d post it here too.

I’m currently a student at Brown (applying for internships), and noticed that several of the internships posted required that students receive credit for the internship. I’m pretty sure that at Brown (at least for Econ majors), you can’t receive credit. Does that mean these internships are off limits? I was a bit confused about this because they were on the Brown Career Board, and I thought they wouldn’t even put them up if they were off-limits to Brown students due to the credit policy.

It means you won’t be paid for the internships. Unless you get Swearer Center money. But yeah, I’m fairly certain most anyone’s allowed to post to the career board, and it’s up to you to figure out whether or not you can take the internship.

The problem is that legally, companies must either pay you or you get credit for an internship. Since Brown doesn’t give credit for internships, it is very likely that the company won’t hire you, because if they did they would be breaking the law.

^Well, internships that are more like apprenticeships than jobs may be done for free. But the guv’mint has been cracking down on companies that replace salaried workers with free interns.
