Credit Score and Student Loans

I have abosolutely no credit right now. My parents are going to take a loan out in my name for $15k towards my first year of school and pay it off themselves. Will this give me a good enough credit score to get a student loan without a cosigner? My parents have told me that they are not going to cosign anything except the $15k. I'm a little worried I won't be able to pay for college...

This sounds exactly like my situation --I am assuming you have too high an EFC for any other forms of finaid, as well?

I recently spoke with a student loan provider representative, and she told me that given the economic situations, private lenders are becoming much more selective and cautious when it comes to student loans. When I mentioned I was planning on building a good credit history in the coming 2 years (I'm covered until then) to apply for private loans without a cosigner, she told me that I would need have a stable job paying at least ~$21,000 a year. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised.

Wow... I'm screwed. My EFC covers all costs. Maybe I can apply for a dependency override because my parents abandoned me, haha. The way I see it, it is abandonment to not cosign a loan for your kid to go to college, especially when you have a high EFC. I think UMich might have some merit scholarships for continuing students...

There's always community college, or the armed forces.

I seriously doubt you will get any sort of dependency override given you situation -- the government views college as the monetary responsibility of your parents, and is quite strict in that regard.

EDIT: If you plan on going to grad-school, just try to make it through your undergrad as best you can, as there is much more funding available once you reach that level of schooling regardless of EFC.
