You can take more than 17 hours of classes per semester. My friend just took 19 hours of classes last semester and he had to get an approval from the dean.

as a freshman, dont take more that 14 or 15 hours ur first semester or even your first year at UT. im sure u can handle it, but u never kno...its just not worth it, and i think a lot of other ppl going there will agree with me.

I know a guy who took 21 hours in a semester. If you can convince an advisor to approve you, you're set.

When we did our last visit, the admissions person we talked to said it would be a good idea to take enough classes each semester so that if you dropped one class, you would still be a full time student (12 credits). She said that if you were only taking, say, 14 credits, and then you had to drop 3-credit class and were then only carrying 11 credits, your parents' health insurance may no longer consider you to be a "full time student."
