I had a question about the credits per course at Dartmouth. I know that in the quarter system one course = one credit and you need "35 credits to graduate"; how does this translate to fulfilling pre-health requirements, though? I'm going to do a pre-veterinary track and most vet school admissions websites say something like "8 semester credits of General Biology" for instance. What would "8 semester credits" be at Dartmouth? Two terms?

Additionally, since P.E. credits don't count toward the 35 graduation requirement credits, does this mean you can take a P.E. on top of your average 3-course load each term?

If semester credits= credit hours then 8 would be 2 courses with lab or 3 without lab, though I’m not really familiar with that term.

As far as PE yes, you take them on top of the average 3 real classes per term.

If you are pre health, there is a pretty good pre health advising program. When you get here, you’ll have the chance to get a list of everything you need to do to fullfill pre health reqs, when those classes are offered, all of that.

taking Cornell Vet, for example…the standard requirement is one year of Frosh (inorganic) chem, one year of bio, one year of organic chem…Cornell is on the semester system, so they require 6 units of each (or a full year). A typical quarter school, such as Chicago or Stanford or UC would mean you take those courses all year, or three quarters. Since Dartmouth is on compacted quarter system, a ‘full year’ of Frosh chem curriculum is offered over two quarters; ditto Bio and Organic chem. Vet schools are aware of Dartmouth’s policy, so it should not be an issue.

Here’s a list of the recommended courses for pre-health: [Required Courses for Medical, Dental, or Veterinary Schools](<a href=“Home | Undergraduate Advising and Research”>Home | Undergraduate Advising and Research)

You can look up the corresponding courses online: [Course Descriptions and Departmental Requirements (ORC)](<a href=“This page has moved”>This page has moved)

bluebayou, the phrase ‘compacted quarter system’ made everything make sense! thanks to everyone for the replies and links. :)
