Are there any opportunities for rowing at NU? Not competitively - just for fun.

Thanks.

There is a team here, they do have competitions but as far as I know anyone can join. It's not SUPER competitive like the Ivies or anything, I know a bunch of people who do it to stay in shape and have fun. It's like a club team.

The club crew team at NU is pretty intense and not for those who aren't commited.

Practice/training is a 6 day a week commitment.

Morning practices (getting up at 5:30 in the morning) are 2-3 times a week and entails practice on the water.

Afternoon practices consists of endurance training (6 mile run, running stairs, hours on the erg) and weight training.

There is also a week of training (in the Fall) prior to the start of school and training in SC during Spring Break - not to mention fundraising efforts (such as working concessions during FB games).

In comparison to my friends who played FB, I would say that crew takes up the same amount of time and commitment.

As for leisure rowing - there may be opportunities along the various Northshore boating facilities (but more so for sailing than rowing).

They have men's and women's rowing at a competitive club level. For a benchmark, they had one top 5 finish at this past Charles, and the rest were near the middle or at the bottom of the pack; but there were a pretty good number of entries. I'd interpret that as on the competitive side of club rowing, and possibly more competitive than some more lax intercollegiate teams.

sounds perfectly wretched. I was thinking of something more "fun."
