whats with crime @usc it seems to be a major drawback...?

We’re walking on campus day and night. Lots of students walking in small groups. Very quiet and safe on campus. Security patrolling frequently.

Astoria,

Business Insider recently listed the Fourteen Most Dangerous Campuses and last year the Daily Beast wrote an article about the Fifty Most Dangerous Campuses in the U.S. Most of the data used was no later than 2009.

SC was NOT listed in either article.

Campus crime is a national problem. There are stories of violent crime on urban campuses and even on campuses in rural areas. Students must use common sense and be aware of their surroundings anywhere they attend college.

Penn, Columbia, Univ. of Chicago, NYU, Fordham, MIT and others are all in urban areas.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: campus and the area immediately north of campus is very safe-feeling. DPS is everywhere, and even my dad (who went to SC in the 1970’s, when it had a terrible reputation, safety-wise, which it probably deserved) found the campus area very safe, even late at night.

I’ve driven around campus a lot, and there are a few areas where I don’t feel so great. PM me and I’ll tell you, but they aren’t areas that students should have any reason to go to (especially the worst one–I wound up there on an accidental detour) and 2 of the 3 are far enough from campus that you probably won’t encounter them unless you are testing different routes. In other words, not necessary excursions.

Yes, crime happens near campus. DPS emails every member of the USC community every time a crime happens and includes as much information as possible, from the suspect’s physical description to a brief account of the incident.

As Georgia Girl says, crime can happen anywhere. It truly can. And the majority of petty theft on campus (laptops, phones, bikes) comes from irresponsibility. No, I’m not victim-blaming; I’m just trying to say that keeping your valuables well-protected is important anywhere, especially on a college campus.
