Criminology Major general questions/info

I'm a high school senior whose totally been freaking out about college for the past few months. Mainly because for most of high school, I really had no clear idea for what it is that I wanted to do or major in.

So I've been spending a lot of time researching the various majors and departments across a wide variety of colleges, but I've just noticed that Irvine is the ONLY college I have seen with a Criminology major and to be blunt; it looks freaking awesome!

So just for more information/clarification, is there anyone who can provide me with a little bit more info on the program?

Any ways to prepare for it in high school, what the job market looks like, internship/job/research/grad school opportunities, how reputable is the program/major, what the course work is like, anything really!

Just a curious high schooler trying to find out what I am really passionate about. Ya'know, before I have to declare to the world what I am passionate about and stay there forever :P

Thanks in advance :)

Your major doesn’t matter(much, the more prestigous your uni, the less it matters) when it comes to getting a job.

get a high GPA, be involved on campus(leadership role in a club relevant to your interests) and take on solid internship experiences. If you’re worried about proving yourself in a business context, minor in econ, accounting or management(or something else which is relevant).

With that said, your major IS a signaling mechanism. Criminology is the study of criminal behavior. This type of thinking is valued in certain areas(e.g. financial auditing, law) but scoffed at in others(engineering, programming). From my own perspective, just know that you will need to work HARDER to be successful in life if you chose what’s considered an easy major because you’ll need to prove yourself outside of the classroom. Fewer psychology majors land high paying jobs than economics majors(some is due to self selection effects)
