Criteria used for Scool Rankings for Graduating Class

I've always wondered what are the criteria used to rank that many students.

Thx for any info/reply.

Typically, private schools do not provide rank in class, but colleges have broad distributions of grades. (usually in a bar chart).

Such policies are usually described in a school’s handbook. Searching for (name of school) (handbook) or (grading policies) usually turns up the relevant section. Another fruitful search is (name of school) and (college profile).

2prepMom is correct, many prep schools do not rank students. Some colleges receive many applications from the same school, though, so they are able to compare students to their peers. College admissions officials are often assigned to particular schools, so the AOs know how to read each prep school’s transcripts.

Thx for the info!
