I am curious to know what people do in this section:

Do you read the questions 1st, or the passage 1st and then go back, or use a different method completely?

Question 2: How do you answer the inference questions. For example "what does the author suggest in line x...." or "what is indicated by using this word...."
I usually overanalyze. But when I try to find clues/ideas that are supported in the passage, I get confused b/c I usually cannot find anything in the passage remotely related to the answer choices.

i read first and underline sentences that i think are important (maybe 5 underlines/passage, not too many mind you)

go slow and find stuff in the passage, ignore time constraints (i have a feeling that you might be saying, "crap i'm running out of time and i have found anything, i need to move on"), you'll get better and better at it so you'll be able to find it quickly
this is where i think practice tests helped me
i was able to see the answers and find the lines that supported the answer choice given so i knew how to find the supporting details quickly and effectively on the real test

actually i think reading the whole passage is just like a waste of time,
ideally: the best way to do CR is : just go through the passage a little bit as rapidly as you can to get the main idea of the passage, and then read the questions and find the answers

but,, i am now in the same situation as caa504: end up with reading the whole passage

but i found i am getting better at answer-finding skills and beginning to read much less of the passage than i previously did.

I have been reading as I do the questions...they're basically in order so I start reading until the first question or whatever, then do the second, reading what is in between... so eventually I read the whole thing. I then go back and answer the main idea or theme questions at the end (gotta be careful to remember if you skip them bubbling though!)

For the shorter passages I read them first before doing the questions, as I know there's not a time issue.

I got a 680 this past time, so it's obviously not working perfectly, but for me, it's been the best mathod I've found, but plan to try out some different things this summer.

if you read fast, go through the whole passage thoroughly making sure you understand the passage completely. then i go through the questions, and on each one going back to the passage and making sure find text that supports the answer i chose. I did it this way and never even came close to running out of time. but if you read a little slower, you might want to try another approach.

basically, nobody can tell you the best way, you have to find it out for yourself.
