I am a Junior in high school interested in running at the naval academy, but I was wondering if Plebes have time to continue to train during plebe summer for the up-coming Cross Country season? Or if you are just supposed to get by on the physical training that you get from normal daily activities which you undergo during plebe summer, from what I have heard they are a pretty good way to stay in shape, but I didn't know if you could build a base for the season off of those two months or if there was extra time to train.

I also recieved a preliminary application form from Coach Cantello, and I was wondering if I could send it back to him before I send my letters to my senators or if I had to wait until the spring when I can start sending my other things in? I tried e-mailing him, but I haven't heard back so I was wondering if any one else knew.

I also have a question similar to this: I'm training for my first marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon next October, and I'm wondering if the running during plebe summer will help keep me in good enough shape so that after it's over, I can start back up with running long distances. A two month loss is pretty significant, for me anyway!

You will need to do most of your base training prior to I-Day.

Once plebe summer starts, you won't have "sports practice" until about two weeks in. Once practices start, which are about 3-4 per week, you won't be doing too much....around 3 miles per practice. Varsity athlete status does not come into play until the fall (except football), so you will not have extra time. Pretty much, you rely on PEP, physical activities during the day, and the limited cc practices to maintain your shape (which you developed prior to I-Day) throughout plebe summer.

You are not required to recieve a nomination before submitting your preliminary application. If you have a strong interest in running cc at USNA, then you should submit a preliminary application.

Best of luck.

usnagirl,

Refer to the post I just answered regarding the training. You will have two months to train for the Marine Corps marathon after plebe summer. Realize, you will be battling the intramural sports period a few times a week to fight for running time. To be honest, it will be a challenge to find running time during plebe year...just because of all the constraints...but it isn't impossible, you just need to "find the time."

Since the Marine Corps Marathon is on a Sunday (4/C don't have liberty), you will need a "chit" (special permission from your company officer) to attend this event. There is a good chance your chit will be approved (especially if you have a USMC company officer).

After plebe year, you might want to consider joining the Naval Academy Marathon team, which meets three times per week (as a group) and the club is intramural exempt (meaning on the days you don't meet as a group, you can train on your own and won't have to worry about finding the time). Currently, you need a Boston Marathon qualifying time to be considered on the "team" (3 hours, 40 minutes for 18-34 y.o. females).

Make sure you are up on NCAA recruiting rules if you are being recruited by Coach Cantello and fill out the NCAA Clearing house material.

Also the preliminary app is online - so you do not send it back the Cantello. There will be things that do come from the Athletic Department which those should be returned to the sender.

Mine ran all five days plebe year. it was possible if you do the Intramural XC in the fall. That is what my Mid has always done. Mine also will run in morning prior to Breakfast formation, did that Plebe year as well. That may depend on your company though.

Plebe summer is one of the worst things for distance running training. The first few weeks of xc practice after plebe summer are brutal. Your mileage goes from very little, probably about 20/week, to over 60. Don't expect to get much work in during sports practice either. Half the time we'd sit on the grass writing letters. Sometimes we get a mile or two in, and we maybe had a few legitimate training sessions during the entire summer.... But everybody will be in the same boat (which I guess is a nice way of saying that your classmates will be suffering right next to you)

profmom2,

That is with respect to serious marathon training. If one is seriously trying to run a marathon at a brisk pace, rather than just trying to complete it, then coordinating a 12-15 mile training run around intramural XC can't be done, especially in the winter time (obviously, it couldn't be done in the morning).

So pretty much I shouldn't plan on much of a base going into the cross country season Plebe year? And so the whole season gets messed up for the cross country guys? Is it the same all four years or is there more of a chance to train once you are an upper classmen?

Perhaps you need to think of the other plebe fitness opportunities as "cross training."

I may be a bit harsh to say that "whole season" gets messed up because of plebe summer. You will get your work in once the summer is over, and you will be in shape once oct/nov rolls around. The worst part is really the transition after plebe summer... after plebe year you will normally have the last block of the summer blocked off so you can start training.

Thanks for the info about the other years that was what I was looking for, I didn't mean to be harsh about the whole summer being wasted, but I know that right now my summer training is what really helps me in the fall so that was why I was wondering.
