If my parents are not going to file taxes for 2011 because they did not work, do I fill out the CSS Profile with my 2010 tax information, or do I just enter zeros for the questions that ask about income?

Thanks!

It’s not that easy, but the information must reflect the 2011 tax year. There will have to be some accountability of financial resources that reflect how your family survived (kindness of others, investments, etc).

So I’m confused. I am filling out the CSS Profile for the 2012-2013 school year but it keeps referring me back to my 2010 tax return for information. Why wouldn’t I take those numbers from the 2011 return I just sent in to the IRS?

double check that you chose the correct tax year/CSS application year as 2011-12 is an option, as is 12-13. you do want to use 2011 tax return. maybe though your school wants extra information? did you submit a CSS back in November?

I’m also working on my CSS, and it keeps asking me for my 2010 taxes. But, I’m on CSS 2012-2013.

Any insight

buuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmppp

please can anyone help?

Parents and students: what income tax form did you use to fill out the CSS 2012-2013?

Thank you all very much!

I haven’t looked at the CSS for a while, but have you chosen “have filed” or do you have “will file”? The 12-13 CSS must reflect the 2011 tax year information.

America, start your own post instead of hijacking another’s.

CSS Profile does not ask if taxes have been filed yet, only FAFSA does. Since you can start filling out the profile before January (and many schools require it for early applications) the questions are worded in a way that assumes you don’t have final 2011 numbers yet and will have to estimate. That is why they direct you to use the 2010 tax returns.

Since my S is a returning student this year we had the luxury of completing our taxes first, then using actual tax numbers to fill out both the Profile and the FAFSA. I only used 2010 numbers where it asked for that info specifically. Because the Profile digs deeply into your financial picture it asks for actual 2010 info + estimated (or actual if available) 2011 info + projected 2012 info.

@Chockisses, so when you filled CSS/Profile out last year, how did you get updated numbers to the colleges? Or did they ask you to do so?
