I received a financial aid estimate from SDSU and it gave me the cost of nonresident tuition. CSUMB also says I do not qualify for in-state tuition. I have not received messages from other schools. I am a permanent resident and not a US citizen but, I have lived in CA for over ten years. I am not sure why I do not qualify for in-state tuition. The SDSU website states " To be eligible for resident classification, you must have established and maintained permanent residence in California at least one full year prior to the residence determination date. You are not eligible if you moved to California primarily to attend a California higher education institution or because you have financial hardship." Any thoughts on why this might be? I am contacting them tomorrow to find out but, I want to see if anyone has also experienced this.
Your residence status is determined by the Office of Admissions according to your responses on the admission application. Does it have something to do with where your parents live or pay taxes? From the UCSD website
"If you are a student being claimed on taxes and/or largely supported by out-of-state persons during any of the past three years, you most likely will not be classified as a California resident for tuition purposes. "
Is your green card still valid? Not up for renewal? Do you have your green card in your possession?
It might just mean you need to confirm your GC status and have it physically seen.
Both of my parents have lived in CA for over ten years and have filed their taxes in CA. I have no connections to anyone or anything from out-of-state.
No clue about your specifics, of course, but mistakes are made a lot. A niece of mine had applied to her state university and was initially categorized as out of state. Upon inquiry, she was told that that determination was made because, in the summer before her senior year of high school, she took a 3 week SUMMER course designed specifically for high school students at an out of state university. Go figure! It was fixed quickly.
Did you graduate from a CA high school? It is not required, but it will raise a flag is not and you’ll have answer why or why not.
If two different schools are considering you a non-resident, there must be something on your application leading them to that decision.
You might also review the residency questions on your application relating to you. and confirm you did not make an error when answering the questions I don’t think you can review or edit what was entered for your parents. That area is not visible once the application is submitted. Just the parent names. I’m guessing you would need to review this information with your target schools and ensure the information was entered correctly.
