Although our D is more interested in majoring in science (chemistry/biochem), she wants to be at a liberal arts school that has solid art studios (visual art/woodworking/metal working). Any suggestions from among the Colleges that Change Lives schools, or similar schools? Not looking for the super selective ones–more like those with acceptance rates in the 40%-plus range.
Not knowing the type of art she wants, you might start with this list. It will be easier to find schools strong in science if you cross check.
As you can imagine, mixed in with the art schools are the top LACs like Swarthmore, Colby, and Wesleyan, but get to page 3 and you find Reed, Bard, Lafayette, W&L, page 4 is Dennison and Oberlin and keep going til you get to the Kalamazoo and Hendrix of the world that you are looking for.
My LAC kid visited the studio art facilities and met with faculty at a number of LACs – of the more moderate acceptance rate schools we visited, I’d say Dickinson, Earlham and Knox had the most impressive studio art facilities. Dickinson’s metal working facilities were incredibly cool – my kid loved the whole converted factory vibe of DIckinson’s studio art facilities. Lawrence, Wooster and Kzoo were fine, not amazing but certainly reasonable facilities. Conn Coll has a lower acceptance rate than those schools but also has good facilities located in the campus Museum building. Denison has great studio art but a 28% acceptance rate. Although we didn’t visit Centre College, I thought its glass blowing program was very cool.
She visited Alfred and loved the endless art studios and engineering labs. Would love to hear from anyone with experience there what it’s like to go there.
