Curious Question for Ben Golub

Hey Ben,

Just curious, have you ever come across an applicant profile in the admissions office that you've seen on CC? If you have, how do you deal with such a situation? Do you match an application with a CC screenname? If you already have an idea of that applicant's posts, would that cause some sort of bias in your mind? Hahah, just curious, Thanks.

No -- at least, I've never noticed anything that I recognized from CC.

If I ever did such an application, I would pass it on to another member of the committee. That's generally the policy for any applicant that one has had contact with -- to prevent bias (in either direction) from creeping in.

Ben, around how many students from India got in CalTech with financial aid, last yr? and was anyone of them an Olympiad participant?

and Ben, how do u consider "being the editor and webdesigner of a website(education, health & cricket related), which gets around 60 hits daily" as an extra curricular activity? is it normal or something good?

To your first question, I don't know off the top of my head, but 10 is probably in the right ballpark. A significant number of them had significant olympiad-type accomplishments.

That extracurricular is certainly good... more original than most. Obviously it won't make or break an application, but it does add.

thanks for your reply Ben...:)

Does CalTech pays much emphasis on Critical Reading and Writing scores of SAT Reasoning Test for international students?
does it accept ACT in lieu of SAT I?

Ben, do you get much applicants from Bangladesh?

No, not as much as for domestic students. Doing well on the TOEFL will basically be okay for your English requirement.

I don't think we get an enormous number, but we certainly get some.

What about domestic applicants for whom English is not a first language? I speak another language at home and I'm wondering how this will affect my app.

BTW, how do you format quotes on this forum?

put the word quote in brackets before the quote, and then /quote in brackets afterward. like HTML with [ ] instead of < >

We take into account the impact on the SAT verbal section and writing section when considering applicants who speak something other than English at home. That is (partially) why we ask that question on the application.

Ben, I sent u a Private Message yesterday. Please reply to that message soon. Thank you. :)
