Hi so I occasionally have some problems walking up stairs and I was just wondering is there any way around the huge flight of stairs at BC?

@purpleowl

There are several elevators you can use. They’re slightly out of the way, but there.

I’m in 01b next to the ra…did you like it there? Anything you can tell me abbout it would be great

@rdpgn105 when I was living in CLXF Xavier was the healthy living one, so all of them were pretty weird and I never saw them. On facebook theres people starting groups for every dorm but you’re going to be closer with the people on your floor (i.e., if your xavier 3 then loyola 3 and fenwick 3). I barely saw people that werent from my floor

@purp you can definitely get around without having to go up/down stairs, but it’ll be a bit of a pain because there are so many stairs… if you live on upper you’d have to take a side street rather than the stairs that most people take. getting to classes won’t be that bad but you pretty much have to take stairs to get past o’neill plaza to go to lower. I mean you could take the elevators in o’neill/campanella but that’ll take a while

Bro -

My D has been assigned to 2nd floor Duchesne East. She’s wondering about room size and configuration. Any input on that and on Duchense in general?

Also, she’s coming from California and we want to ship a couple of boxes. Do you know how that’s done? Where its sent? Where you pick it up?

Thanks.

@fraire Thanks! So if I understood correctly the three buildings are connected??

Yeah CLXF is four dorms connected. Each floor is just one long hallway with each dorm section separated by like 4 stairs. When you walk in you’ll be on the 2nd floor right between xavier and fenwick and you can take the stairs or elevator to get to whatever floor.

I lived in Duchesne East last year. The rooms are pretty much the size you’d expect. Not very big, but not cramped or anything. How you decide to arrange it can make a difference. There will be two built in closet units, some built in shelving on the walls, two desks, two dressers, and two beds.
Duchesne has really nice lounges. There’s a lounge on the first floor with a big flat screen TV, a couch, and a lot of chairs and tables there. Then there is a silent study lounge in the basement. It was very popular and packed with students studying every night. I really liked just being able to go downstairs to go do work.
Duchesne is located at the bottom of a hill, so you do have to hike up it everyday to go to the dining hall and what not. It also has a big lawn where we’d always play soccer, frisbee, or just hang out.

Do Newton dorms (specifically keyes) have carpet or tile? Do we need an area rug in our room? Also how is the lighting? At orientation there was barely any lighting in Vanderslice. Are Newton dorms the same way?

Basement dorms have tile. All other floors have carpeting. If you’re on a basement floor a rug could be useful. For basement rooms get something like a Swifer cleaner. Vacuums won’t pick up everything.

The lighting in the Newton dorms is far better than in Vandy’s rooms. You don’t really need anything else except maybe a desk light.

@SaintSaens are you sure theres no carpeting in the basement, the website says all rooms have wall to wall carpeting

Are we allowed to bring our own microwaves and minifridges or do we need to rent a microfridge?

^You are allowed to bring your own microwaves and fridges.

The website is misleading. Basement rooms have tile floors.

^ I remember my quad in Keyes having carpet. Many basement rooms do.

Hey Bronovan, thanks for answering all these questions…your replies have been so helpful! I was thinking of starting Chinese this year as a freshman. All the beginners classes require a 3 credit practicum and I can’t find a way to fit it in my schedule this semester. Would it be possible for me to start Chinese in the spring semester?

This applies to everyone:

Make sure you DO NOT rent the microwave/fridge from the company BC recommends. It’s ridiculously expensive, plus it allows RAs the freedom to check inside without your consent. Buying your own from Walmart/Target/etc is much cheaper, and you have to consent to search.

This also applies to everyone:
I see lots of people asking about their dorms. Actually BC provides the floorplan of every dorm and here is the website. Log in with your Agora username and password.

VBFan, to take chinese 2nd semester, you’d have to test into it or take chinese 1st semester as well

@jamdur316 Ah okay I know exactly where you’ll be haha. That’s the quad I knew the least, I’ve been in there only a couple times I think. I’ve heard that it’s actually the biggest quad on Newton, not sure how anyone would know that for sure but it is a pretty good size room. The basement does not have any carpeting. The windows are quite small so you may want to make sure someone is bringing good lighting.

@BCHSEagles How many years ago were you in the quad across the bathroom? I was in there quite a bit and there was definitely no carpet anymore.

@VBFanatic1234 Thanks for the support! As to your question, I placed out of languages so I do not know the ins and outs of the department. I can’t confirm that you’d be able to jump into it second semester unfortunately. It could be the case that only the second half of a course is available as a continuation of the first semester, in which case I don’t think it would be open to you. Like fraire said, you will probably have to test into it.
