Current BC Freshman Answering Any and All Questions

Any Freshmen that chose BC over Case Western? Can you PM me, I’d love to ask you a few questions on your choice

Is is possible to be accepted into the honors program sophomore year?

I am interested in swimming at college; however, am not good enough to compete at the Varsity level. Is there any club swimming team or intramural team at BC?

@bronovan I got my letter yesterday in the mail and I was waitlisted

Whoa, acceptances come out and a plethora of questions arrive, fantastic!

@ibfailure Gay dating is essentially nonexistent, as far as I know. Gay people are widely tolerated but I have never heard of a gay couple in my time here.

@bunny2015 Yes BC is definitely predominantly white, but there are many outlets for people of all ethnicities to fit in. If you can find your niche, whether that be people on your floor or clubs and such, then you’re set.

@m11304 Yes, freshman with exceptional first semester grades will be contacted concerning joining the Honors program, and the entire year will be looked at for admission sophomore year.

@cheerforlife I’m pretty sure there is no intramural team, but there could be a club team. Can’t find anything online to suggest that there is on though, sorry =/

@koppanyj I knew you had a shot! If you are even remotely considering BC, accept a spot and see what happens, I know several kids who got in off the waitlist so it can’t hurt to try!

@ibfailure

I know of a few gay couples here, but it’s not really something widely noticed. To be fair, there’s a lot of random-ish hooking up at BC anyways, no matter the sexual orientation.

@bronovan (or someone who would help me out)
I just get accepted!! However I have some questions about BC, especially the cost.
I love your brutally candid style, please answer me like that.

How much will a normal student spend for one year? (No luxury, just a normal life there.) I know there is a official estimate, but I want to know what it is actually.

Is living outside campus allowed? How is the campus dorm compared to outside campus housing? How much would housing outside campus cost?

Can student do part-time job? How much is the approximate pay?

I’m an international so they don’t provide financial aid. And my budget is about 200000$ or a little bit more, I don’t know if I can manage the fees.

How is the Computer Science/computer engineering program is BC?

Is it ok for me to have no religious affiliation? BC seems to be very religious…

Is there piano rooms or piano guidance for BC students… Just started it and don’t want to drop.

I suppose I ask too much and being a little annoying… Sincerely hope you could answer my questions…

Yes, depends on the job, but could be $8-15/hr.

This is the bigger issue to #3. You need a work visa to work in the US. The College can help you obtain one, but it may take awhile. Suggest you contact:

BC does Comp Sci well, but has no engineering programs.

This may not have to do with BC directly, but in all honesty, how do BC students regard the northeastern students? Do they go to the same parties/interact with each other?

@pinewu Thank you! Ask away! I try to help how I can =)

That’s an interesting question, and considering what the college life may or may not entail for you, it can depend widely. Going to be blunt here, do you have a fake ID and plan on going to bars or other 21+ events? Are you a fan of music and if so are you planning to see all your favorite bands when they pass through Worcester or Boston? The cost of one’s social life can vary widely, so it depends on your lifestyle. I personally may spend something in the range of $20 - $60 in a typical week, which is maybe a little above average, and more if there’s an event in the school or city going on.

Living off campus becomes a thing in your sophomore year and onwards. I think something like 98% of freshman live on campus. But yes, it is allowed and is a decently popular option when you get older. How good your dorm is depends on where you are put, as BC has been remodeling different dorms over the past several years, so you could be in a newly redone hall or a relatively older dorm. Overall though, I can’t complain about my actual dorm, and it is one of the older ones. I can’t give you a solid number for living off campus, but I have heard that it is very comparable to living on campus, perhaps very slightly cheaper.

Yes students can have jobs, I actually just came back from mine! Dining halls are usually the best place to start looking. Normal hours in the dining halls start at $9 for your first year, and up to about $11 or $12 if you work late night hours. There are also jobs in the libraries and other facilities but they are fewer in number.

I would look into what bluebayou linked, I’m not entirely sure how that would work myself.

There is a computer science department (no engineering) and it is one of the smaller departments at that, so you will have much more individual attention early on compared to, say, economics or psychology.

Most people here are Catholic by association only, and I definitely would not let that be a reason that stops you from coming here in the least. Most kids would say they are part of some religion or another but most honestly could not care less about it at all. There is a religious presence about the school because it is Catholic after all, but there are many open nonbelievers or non-Catholics that get along perfectly with anyone else, religion is never an issue around here.

I can’t give you a 100% certain answer, but I would say that with a school the size of BC there is most likely somewhere you could pursue your interests in piano.

Congrats on the acceptance!

@Mango15 There’s definitely a rivalry between most Boston schools, so BC kids would probably say they are smarter, better looking, and more fun than Northeastern kids, but at the end of the day it’s all in good fun. You’ll find jerks at both schools that take that stuff seriously but it really just stems from hometown hockey grudge matches. There is a ridiculous amount of kids that go to school in the Boston area, so most kids know at the very least one person from Harvard, MIT, Babson, Northeastern, etc., so BC kids don’t really regard NU students any differently than students from any other school (except BU =P). As far as actual interaction with NU kids, it doesn’t really happen. The schools are too far apart and have enough going on in their own areas for a big amount of students from either school to travel to one another, unless they are meeting someone they already know. However, the bar scene is much more diverse, as students from all over the city will interact (in some way or another…) at Boston’s famous watering holes.

I’m an accepted student and I got my financial aid package today. My heart is really set on BC but with the package they gave me, I’d graduate 100K in debt, which I obviously don’t want. I’ve read that many students get the financial aid they need, they just have to be persistent with the financial aid office. Does anyone know of how students were able to talk to the financial aid office to get more aid? I emailed my financial aid officer but I’m not sure how much good that will do. Any suggestions would be great!

If I haven’t sent in my parents tax returns yet, will I be screwed out of financial aid?

I was just recently admitted and didn’t think I would get in, hence the delay.

What type of concerts come through the Boston Area? I live in Seattle and all we get is rock concerts and the occasional hip hop concert, but not all the time. How is it in Boston? I like jazz, hiphop, rap, r &B, and pop. thanks

@bronovan: Thank you for you detailed reply… I learned a lot.

@butlerbulldogs34 I’m really not sure how you might be able to get more aid out of the school but messaging your financial aid officer is a good place to start. At the end of the day, BC like all schools is an investment, it’s up to you whether 100k is a manageable sum or not, but hopefully it works out for you!

@SDTash23 I don’t think you’ll get screwed out of it, you should be alright, but you should check with the school soon just in case.

@bunny2015 Boston has many many great venues all the time, tons of great tours pass through here. If someone doesn’t pass through Boston, chances are they will go to Worcester, about an hour or a little more away and accessible by train I believe.

@bronovan
I did some research and found that there are many great apartments that are both near BC and inexpensive, most are among 450-700$/month. If I do part-time job simultaneously then I could probably reduce the expense to about 55000$/year so I could afford it. Problem solved, thanks for your help : )

Hi! I was recently accepted to the Lynch School of Education and I hope to study Secondary English Ed. BC is my #1 school and I am also considering Miami of Ohio (because of a GENEROUS financial aid package there).

I am super excited about BC, I have visited last summer and this spring twice and attended a philosophy class. I loved it!! I am just curious about the social life/party scene at BC. When I visited BC it seemed not strict, but just very focused and I know academics are a big deal there. that’s why I want to go! I hear the BC students have a “work hard play hard” mentality. Is this true? Are there good parties on campus/near campus? I want to do well in college but definitely want to have a good time. Is the authority super strict/restrictive on parties?

Thanks!

Hi, I’ve been accepted as a potential member of the class of 2016, and because all of the schools I’ve been admitted to are strong academically, I’m looking at other criteria to help me select my home for the next four years.

The idea of my college being a “home” is very important, particularly because I grew up in the Greater Boston area but am anxious to move out. I want to switch my identity to be that of an Eagle; I want to be proud to attend my school and to be surrounded by those who feel the same way.

This leads directly to a couple question, and extrapolated to include some others.

How is school spirit at BC? Do people all get pumped up for the next big Hockey game or Football game, and travel there in droves (maybe with hearty pregaming)?

Are people accepted as peers regardless of their priorities or walks of life (within reason of course)? If they’re black or jewish or homosexual will they feel out of place or even slightly discriminated against? I’m deathly afraid of being yet another white male acting as a bystander to hate and cruelty, no matter how subtle.

How easy is it to get to know professors and even befriend them? How large are classes? Will I have opportunities to cooperate with my classmates or will they all be wary of their ranking and potential Honors standings?

Parties. Are they raging? What percentage of students drink? How sexually active is the average student? Is dating acceptable and widespread, or is more of a one-night college?

What’s the relationship between BC and other nearby colleges (I understand BU is to be despised)?

Will I be looked down upon for not subscribing to the apparently preppy dress standard prevalent at BC?

Are people comfortable reaching outside their social circles? How cliquey is it? Are students accepting of change?

I know it’s a lot of questions to ask, but I find myself seeking answers to all of the above as I meticulously turn over my attendance decisions for the next month. Thanks in advance for candid answers!

^ I second ThaKalp’s questions! Especially concerning discrimination.
