I was wondering about my chances.
Im currently a senior in Pennsylvania applying for Linguistics. And I am not that great of a test taker but did well in my college class and high school coursework. Also I know that not everyone is accepted from the Middle 50% and some with my scores do.

-Taking 4 AP classes

@kopp, not to be rude, i would be surprised if you got in. your test scores are really low for BC and your extracurriculars just show you liked playing sports pretty much, but never really took a leadership role besides secretary of your student government. also, for uniqueness, demonstrating fluency in english is nothing to brag about and is pretty much expected at BC. nothing really stands out in my eyes

@fraire My bad, I didn’t specify that I took German and Spanish together as my foreign languages. English isn’t one. But I volunteered over 150 hours in the past year and was moved from a regular volunteer to outreach which I am the youngest member. I want to major in languages which I feel are the future. And I know that my scores would place me in the bottom 25% but I was deferred during early action which I guess gives me a shot. Hopefully I get accepted because otherwise the way financial aid is going, I won’t be able to afford college. Also we do not have very great scores in our school.

Is there something leading you to believe that BC is on the more generous end of financial aid?

Boston College is a Best Value College. I only applied to Best Value Colleges and so far have only gotten rejections and deferrals. And I am down to three so if all three say no, well then no college for me

Assuming you have decent grades, how hard is it to transfer into the business college from the liberal arts college in your sophomore or even junior year?

@Koppany, to be honest again, volunteering isn’t that spectacular on a college application. literally everybody has 50+ hours of it. I am a linguistics minor and its a pretty small department and with not too many kids but as you know learning foreign languages isn’t what linguistics is about. BC is pretty generous on financial aid though if you need it–you won’t get a full ride unless your a presidential scholar, but I only had to pay $8k last year and I know someone who only had to pay $2k.

@bruce, I think they only accept like 5 students total every year, i’m not really sure though. I’ve heard its really hard but possible

@fraire Thanks again for the help. I just want to do something where I can study foreign languages, their roots and how they developed while making a difference and not spending a boatload of money. But so far no luck. My parents are out of work and so far with no acceptances it would mean I would have to find a job in the labor force that is already unemployed. Ill post on here if I am accepted or not anywhere on April 2.

Koppanyj:
If you need a low cost schooling option, I encourage you to have a Plan-B for a local state school or something similar. While many do get decent financial aid packages from BC (and you might too), a good number do not. If you read through the older threads on this forum, you’ll see a number of accepted students are forced to choose a school elsewhere because of of insufficient financial aid from BC.

@koppanyj I don’t know why fraire is being so harsh on your app, I don’t think it deserves that much heat. It’s honestly more well rounded than people that I know that actually go here, and being in the top 2% of your class is outstanding. However, the SAT scores really are under what BC expects. I’m not going to say admission is impossible but you’ll have to see if everything else on your app will convince the admissions officers to look past your scores.

Edit: Just read your post on community service and am more inclined to believe that you could still have a good shot. I absolutely disagree with fraire when he says community service isn’t that big, as it is probably the primary reason I was put in Honors here. I was maybe top 10% and above average SATs but nothing mind blowing, but I had a heavy duty community service experience in South America that I tied to my ethnic background. BC literally could not be more obsessed with community service. Obviously 50 hours that might be mandatory for your high school isn’t going to get any good looks from admissions, but 150 hours with a good story and purpose behind it could definitely be huge. Your ethnicity and how it lends itself to your clear focus for what you want to study is also very interesting. Hopefully you put it all out there on your app and you will have a fair chance. I don’t intend for this to turn into an acceptance thread once that time comes but I’m interested to see how you do, feel free to post it here if you’d like.

@jp50 Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it.
@bronovan Yeah I am also ethnic since my parents came from Hungary and taught me the language and culture. Im hoping that I will be given the privilege to be accepted into Boston College to study linguistics since I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible in high school to help me later on to study the roots of culture through language. I will keep you posted.

I have a question about transferring within the different schools. I have been admitted to A&S but I’ve become interested in CSOM. How hard is it to transfers schools?

Hey there, I’m another freshman at BC so I can answer for you.

Transferring into CSOM is borderline impossible. They only accept a few in-school transfers into the school, because csom is reallly really good. Really tough, but not impossible.

This is for my friend who got deferred EA:

Does BC have a good biochemistry department? Biochemistry is the department she wishes to major in. We both know BC is good in the humanities/history department, but her major is in the sciences, and if she gets in, she wants to know how good biochemistry is.

Thanks!

@DesiCollegeGal Yes there is a Biochemistry major at BC. I don’t know much about it myself because I haven’t taken any sciences but I know many people that do and they seem to enjoy it themselves, sorry that’s all I can contribute but there will be much more info about it online.

^ Thank you!

BC has an excellent Chem department, and a couple of prestigious professors. The good news with BC’s Chem department is that it is on the smallish side relative to other mid-sized Unis, so one can obtain a lot of personal interaction with profs, and on-site research opportunities with money. After Organic Chem, the class sizes drop precipitously.

How is the gay dating scene at BC?

From what I’ve heard BC is a predominately white school. I’m a black girl, would I fit in? How about the area surrounding the college, is there no black people?
